The New Trending Hotspot to Meet Friends?
The Four-Cut Photo Craze in Korea
One thing we never forget to do when we’re with friends is to take pictures together. But rather than the regular selfie, Koreans these days are choosing to take four-cut photos. Four-cut photos refer to a series of pics taken in quick succession inside a self-service photo booth. Users can pick a frame and choose their best takes to be printed in a single photo strip.
But wait, haven’t photo booths been around forever? Sure, but K-photo booths and the four-cut photo strips are totally different. In this edition, we’re diving into Korea’s four-cut photo culture, both a new form of entertainment and a way to capture memories.
In Korea, the number of unmanned four-cut photo booths increased explosively from 1,006 in 2023 to over 3,000 in 2024. Their main consumers are teens and twenty-somethings, making up over 80% of all users.
Why have four-cut photos become such a big deal for young Koreans? First off, the lighting is next-level. We’re talking professional-grade studio quality. Some of these booths even come with built-in AI filters which help to slim your face, airbrush your skin, and give your eyes a brilliant sparkle. This means everyone can be happy, since even group shots come out flawless.
Four-cut photos have become so popular that they are often featured in Korean media as well. For example, on the dating reality show Heart Pairing, the couples snap a four-cut pic on every important date. At the Baeksang Arts Awards, Korea’s most prestigious arts awards ceremony, actors take four-cut photos as they arrive on the red carpet.
By now, four-cut photo booths have become must-visit sites for tourists as well. You can find them near pretty much every major attraction.
Most four-cut photo booths come fully equipped with massive mirrors, hairbrushes, hair dryers, and even curling irons. With these tools, users can touch up their hair or makeup before snapping the pics. Since the photos are taken in quick succession, there is not as much time as you’d think to strike the right pose. If you miss your timing, you might end up with some hilariously awkward expressions. If you’re picking a celebrity-themed frame, it’s important to plan your poses in advance so you get the perfect shot.
After the shoot, you can scan the accompanying QR code to download digital files of both the original pics and a short video of your photo session. But this link has an expiration date, so make sure to save your files before they’re deleted. Keeping a copy of the printed strip is sweet, but you don’t want to miss the high-res digital files, either.
Want to capture a memory with someone you love? What if that someone you love is a celebrity? In reality, that would definitely be a no go. But what if it’s in a four-cut photo booth? When an artist makes a comeback or an actor is starring in a new drama or a star is celebrating an upcoming birthday, their management labels often collaborate with photo booth brands to release limited-edition frames.
This isn’t just limited to bona fide celebrities. Online influencers and popular characters are often featured in frames as well. From famous Korean influencers to beloved animation, webtoon, and emoji characters, there are new events announced practically every month. These limited edition photo strips pull double duty as both celebrity merch and cherished souvenirs for the fans.
One thing to note is that these collabo frames are typically only found in specific locations and for a limited time. For this reason, you’ll want to get there fast when one of your favorite celebrities or characters releases a special frame. Fans have been known to change their plans to meet somewhere close to the places that carry these frames, so much so that these spots are referred to as “frame-se-gwon,” or “nearby frame zone.”

Moreover, four-cut photo brands are constantly coming up with interesting concept designs. Think elevators, the subway, and airplane lavatories. Part of the fun is to take pics in all these unique booths to complete your own collection. With better lighting than a selfie and an amazing backdrop to match, nothing could be better!
If you want to try out a bunch of different booths and frames in a single day, it’s best to head over to Gangnam, Seongsu, or Hongdae that are crowded with these booths. Gangnam, in particular, is full of not just four-cut booths but places to shop, eat, and have fun, so make sure to include this district in your travel itinerary.
For a uniquely Korean mix of stanning and souveniring, make sure to grab your own four-cut photo experience.
