Manisan Mountain, standing at 472 meters above sea level in the southwestern part of Ganghwado Island, holds a significant place in Korean mythology. According to legend, it was at the Chamseongdan Altar on this mountain where Dangun Wanggeom, the founder of the first Korean kingdom in 2333 BC, performed rituals. Today, it remains revered and is where the sacred flame for national sporting events such as the National Sports Festival, a domestic Olympics in Korea, is lit. From the summit of Manisan Mountain, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Hwanghae Sea and North Korea.
