Take a trip to Yeongwol, the real-life setting of “The King’s Warden (2026),” one of Korea’s biggest box-office hits. The film is based on the true story of King Danjong, a 15th-century Joseon ruler who was dethroned by his uncle at a young age and sent into exile in Yeongwol. Many of the places tied to his life still remain today—from the site of his exile to the residence where he spent his final days, as well as his tomb, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. This itinerary lets you explore these historic sites while also enjoying local festivals and regional cuisine.

Total distance: Approx. 4.9 km
Cheongnyeongpo Scenic Spot (영월 청령포)
This is where King Danjong spent his years in exile. Surrounded by water on three sides, it can only be reached by boat, giving it the feel of a secluded island. With steep cliffs blocking the rear, the site still conveys just how cut off he was from the outside world. Thick with centuries-old pine trees, the area stays green year-round and offers a calm, scenic setting for a leisurely walk.
Yeongwol Jangneung Royal Tomb [UNESCO World Heritage] (영월 장릉(단종) [유네스코 세계유산])
This is the royal tomb of King Danjong, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its beautiful setting among the mountains. Rituals honoring the king have continued here for over 500 years, still performed in the traditional way. At the history hall near the entrance, you can see his portrait and ornate royal garments, offering a glimpse into Korea’s royal court culture.
Jagyuru Pavilion and Gwanpungheon Hall (자규루 및 관풍헌)
After fleeing a flood, King Danjong moved here—and this is also where his life came to an end at just 17, when he was sentenced to death by sayak (royal execution poison). Set in the heart of Yeongwol, the area blends modern streets with traditional hanok houses, creating a unique atmosphere. Sit on the daecheongmaru (wooden floor hall), take a few photos, and enjoy a quiet break along the way.
Yeongwol Seobu Morning Market (영월 서부아침시장)
This is a lively traditional market where you can experience everyday local life up close. The smell of food cooking fills the air, and people stopping to eat right at the stalls add to the bustling atmosphere. Don’t miss the buckwheat pancakes, buckwheat crepes, and deep-fried and braised chicken—crowd favorites for all ages.
Danjong Culture Festival
Danjong Culture Festival takes place annually in April, honoring the life and legacy of King Danjong. The festival is filled with highlights, from parades recreating royal funeral and wedding processions to lively musical performances. The festival for 2026 features a special talk with director Jang Hang-jun and the cast of “The King’s Warden,” along with a nighttime drone show. Photo Credit: Yeongwol Culture & Tourism Foundation
