“Alchemy of Souls (2022)” and “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 (2023)” are two Korean dramas that integrate fantasy lore in a historical setting. “Alchemy of Souls” revolves around characters whose fates have changed due to a soul-switching magic, and “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938” follows Lee Yeon (played by Lee Dong-wook), a nine-tailed fox, in his journey back in time to the year 1938. Both dramas were filmed in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, which provided a magnificent background that brought fictional characters and settings to life.

Mungyeongsaejae Open Set (문경새재 오픈세트장)
A film set that was represented as Daeho, a fictional city, in the drama “Alchemy of Souls (2022).” Many other historical dramas were also filmed here, including “Kingdom (2020),” “The Moon Embracing the Sun (2012),” and “Under the Queen’s Umbrella (2022).”

Gomosanseong Fortress (고모산성)
The place that appeared as the backdrop in the scene where Mu-young (played by Ryu Gyeong-soo) reminisced about his childhood in “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 (2023)”. This fortress is presumed to have been built before the 4th century. The walking trail along the illuminated fortress wall is a great place to take a romantic evening walk.

Mungyeong Seonyudonggyegok Valley (선유동계곡(문경))
The valley where Jang Uk (played by Lee Jae-wook) found and embraced Mu-deok in “Alchemy of Souls.” It also has appeared in “House on Wheels,” where the cast stopped by to rest in the episode featuring IU. The sight of the stream flowing down between the rocky cliffs offers a refreshing sensation.

Mungyeong Rail Bike Gurang-ri Station
The place where Hae-in (played by Kim Ji-won) and Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) enjoyed a date on a rail bike in “Queen of Tears (2024).” The bike is powered by an electric motor so a gentle push on the pedals is all you need to get the railbike running. The rail track is 6.6 kilometers roundtrip, and takes approximately 50 minutes to finish the course.
