Seoul hides a mountain nobody talks about — and at its heart lies one of Korea's most extraordinary Catholic sites.
Samseongsan Holy Ground sits 250 meters above Seoul, deep in a granite forest that once sheltered persecuted believers fleeing Joseon's brutal crackdowns. Here, in 1839, three French missionary martyrs — Saint Bishop Imbert, Saint Father Maubant, and Saint Father Chastan— were martyred in the Gihae Persecution. Korean Catholics risked their lives to carry the bodies of these young foreign priests into this mountain and bury them in secret. All three were later canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1984 as part of Korea's 103 Martyrs.
This 7-hour day tour is built for pilgrims who want more than a bus ride to a cathedral. The day begins with Mass at Samseongsan Catholic Church, followed by a meditative walk along the Stations of the Cross and the Rosary Path through forest and rock. After lunch, the route continues up Mt. Gwanaksan Mountain — a proper mountain hike across granite ridges — descending toward Seoul National University.
