  • This was a royal palace of Joseon, a state founded by King Taejo of Joseon. The name of the palace means “enjoy great fortune and prosper.” It is the largest and the most elaborate palace among the five Joseon palaces in Seoul. Most of the original palace was burned down during the Japanese invasion of Korea (Imjin War). Today’s palace was reconstructed during the rule of King Gojong of Joseon. The splendor of the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, the pond at Hyangwonjeong, and the sculptures of Geunjeongjeon Hall showcase the palace’s position as the foremost royal palace of Joseon.
