Meet the Primeval Forest from the Beginning of Time

Gotjawal is a common word used to refer to forest areas in Jeju-do. In the Jeju dialect, 'got' means forest, and 'jawal' means bush. Four Gotjawal forests are especially popular among visitors to the island: Hangyeong-Andeok, Aewol, Jocheon-Hamdeok, and Gujwa-Seongsan. Among the four forests, the one in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si has been designated as Jeju Gotjawal Provincial Park.
Sitting at the northern end of Gotjawal Provincial Park, the forest in Hwansangsup Forest Gotjawal Park was created when trees, grass, and flowers settled on land formed by hardening lava that erupted from Donurioreum Parasitic Cone. Gotjawal is a volcanic forest formed on round, lumpy basalt, which makes its appearance wildly different from inland forests. The roots of tall trees are clearly exposed above ground, creating an impressive sight to behold, due to the characteristics of Gotjawal, which lacks of top soil. The unique ecology of Gotjawal is also intriguing, with raspberries growing in the cold of January and leaves falling in April when cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Sumgol Valley is another unique space shaped by the unique topography of Gotjawal, where the 15℃ wind blows all year round. In addition, you don’t want to miss the filming locations for the band BTS' The Most Beautiful Moment in Life album cover and the variety show, Law of the Jungle.
