Haklimjae, Hanok stay for our family’s homely and healing time
The first word popping up in your mind upon encountering Haklimjae is “mother's house.” The reason you think of “mother's house” instead of other words like “comfortable” or “cozy” is that a mother’s house evokes all of those feelings. A place that you always find cozy and friendly, that’s why you would like to visit Haklimjae again.
“Haklimjae” means “a space of abundant learning.” The owners named the place themselves wishing that those who visit here can learn something. Even if it's a very small thing. Do you mean I have to study during a vacation? No. Learning here is more of a way of controlling one's mind through thoughtfulness or understanding, not some knowledge that you need to memorize. That’s also the reason the arty owner engraved sayings such as “As if their happiness is my own” and “Live a life without greed” on a piece of wood and hung them here and there in Haklimjae.
Behind the main gate, a trip down memory lane begins. Haklimjae has many features that would remind one of a mother’s house. Hanok with subtle woody scent and beautiful yard with a grass, and spacious wooden platform where you can lie down spreadeagle. Even the wind blowing silently and caressing the back of your neck feels similar to that of your mother's house where you lived as a little child.
Haklimjae consists of the main Hanok building, front yard, and vegetable garden for a farming experience Each space is connected by a low set of stairs. The front yard was created with a pavilion and a pond as a playground where children can play and for families to have a barbecue. The brazier made of mud is large enough for an iron pot where you can cook pork belly and baeksuk (Korean chicken soup). Want to have smoked barbecue? You can simply put a grill on the top of it. The vegetable garden is another gem of Haklimjae. Unlike sweet potatoes that you have to wait for until fall, you can enjoy lettuce and large green onion anytime and to your heart's content.
Haklimjae’s main building has three rooms. Unlike the “Heemang (hope)” and “Sarang (love)” rooms, “Hangbok (happiness)” room is an ondolbang heated with extra heat from cooking. The floor is papered with perilla oil, which adds a tasteful atmosphere. While the ondolbang is loved by the elderly, Haklimjae’s secret hideout is popular among children. The view of the secluded village from the attic is as beautiful as a framed painting. Equipped with beam projector for movie screening, karaoke machine, and latest massage chair, the living room is spacious enough for two families to enjoy. Any dog that can become a friend of Dain (bichon), Haklimjae’s mascot, is always welcome. Haklimjae conducts disinfection 2-3 days a week for the safe rest of visitors and keeps a visitor list, a thermometer, a hand sanitizer, etc. at the entrance of the main building at all times.
