Exploring Hanok Village
Gimpo International Airport, located in the western outskirts of Seoul, is the second major access point for those flying in to visit South Korea’s capital city. I’d taken a number of trips from Gimpo but I’d never explored the areas nearby until my Russian friend had a long layover there on her way to the Philippines. Since we were pressed for time, I had to show my friend Korea’s unique historical and cultural appeal using locations that could easily be reached from the airport.
Just a 40-minute bus ride from the airport is Gimpo Hanok Village, which gives a good indication of how Korea looked and felt before its rapid industrial development and the economic boom. Even on the way to the village my friend showed a lot of interest in the Kakao Map app that I used.
People can try traditional Korean games and experiences in the Hanok Village
Hanok Village map
A hanok village is a complex of traditional Korean wooden houses. The village employs the same city planning style that was used when the majority of Koreans lived in houses with yards. Hanok homes traditionally had three generations living together under one roof, so the houses usually had a number of rooms connected by corridors and a yard where the whole family could spend time together. Organizers of Gimpo Hanok Village gathered different creators, craftsmen and entrepreneurs and allowed them to open stores, workshops and cafes in the village. Visitors can observe the craftsmen at work, drink traditional Korean tea and buy a variety of handmade items such as pottery and dolls. In the main plaza of the village we played traditional Korean games.
Besides books, they have interactive exhibitions
My friend and I have a huge interest in visual storytelling, so our next stop was the Korea Manhwa Museum (Korea Comic Book Museum) in Bucheon. There, we learned how Korean comics started in 1909 and transcended into modern times. In addition to books, they have interactive exhibitions such as a retro-style comic book store with a collection of classic comic books. In Korea, comics are now mostly consumed in the form of webtoons and are popular with people of all ages. The museum had a special section dedicated exclusively to webtoons, so I took the chance to note down the titles of the webtoons that looked interesting. The museum is well worth a visit and the low price is an extra bonus -- one adult ticket costs 5,000 won. We took the bus but the museum is also reachable by subway, just travel to Samsan Gymnasium Station and head out of exit 5.

Cat cafe: view form the top
Cats are very relaxed there.
In the cat cafe they have cat toys for visitors.
A trip to Korea wouldn’t be complete without a visit to a cat cafe and Gangseo-gu, Seoul, has one of the most unique cat cafes in the country. A short journey from Gimpo International Airport, the cafe consists of a sizeable indoor area, a large yard and a hill with a beautiful garden where the cats can run around and play.
Very skeptical about the concept of a cat cafe, my friend was incredibly unenthusiastic about the idea but she soon changed her mind. We had so much fun playing with the cats and taking photos that she didn’t want to leave! Tickets cost 12,000 won and staff teach you how to interact with the cats before you enter.
Cats there are very playful.

Seoul Botanic Garden
Unlike a lot of other large cities, Seoul is surprisingly green, with lots of parks scattered around for citizens to enjoy. I wanted to show my friend that even in a concrete jungle, there are multiple opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. I brought my friend to Seoul Botanic Park. The park contains an impressive array of flora, but the main pull of the park is undoubtedly the enormous, sculptural greenhouse which boasts a collection of tropical and Mediterranean plants. It is a welcoming oasis for those wishing to relieve stress and recharge. It’s also aesthetically striking, a great place for those passionate about photography. At 5,000 won, which is reasonably priced, and it’s easily reached by subway. The park is only a short distance from Magongnaru Station.
Seoul Botanic Park has a nice collection of tropical and Mediterranean plants.
With so many wonderful experiences just a short distance from Gimpo International Airport, there’s plenty of opportunities to entertain friends visiting on a stopover, or those just wanting to explore a new area.
Line Hotel Entrance
After an incredibly busy day, we headed to our hotel in Gimpo. I used Kakao Map to find out how to get there. It’s a good idea to save the address in Korean so that it’s easy to find on the app and it’s good for showing to taxi drivers. We were staying at Line Hotel and were extremely satisfied with our choice.

Hotel had a very nice room.
It was very nice to get prepared for the next day.
The room had a bathtub, a flat screen TV, a computer and two very big, comfortable beds. It was very spacious and the computer was especially useful for my friend as she wasn’t traveling with her laptop. After she checked her emails we went to get some snacks from the convenience store. We heated up some food in the microwave near the check-in counter at the hotel and then watched a movie and enjoyed some popcorn and snacks. We laughed and talked until late at night and eventually drifted off to sleep, waking up feeling refreshed the next day. Getting ready can be a hectic experience but the design of the room made things easy. We especially appreciated the wide vanity table, as it allowed us plenty of space to both complete our skincare routines and our makeup. Another great thing about the hotel is its location. It’s situated close to the bus stop, a number of restaurants and a convenience store. We grabbed breakfast at one of the nearby restaurants and headed for the airport.
