The musical market brings good news after a long unwilling suspension caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We can once again meet the actors we love on musical stages. Jekyll & Hyde was the first to go. We see big stars, including Shin Sung-rok, who fantastically pulled off the villain in K-drama My Love from the Star, Park Eun-tae, Ryu Jung-han, and Kai who are widely loved actors for their amazing singing and acting skills.
If you are a fan of K-Pop, Equal and Jack the Ripper will definitely catch your attention. Meet your favorite stars, including Jun. K of 2PM, Baekho of NU’EST, and Hong Joo-chan of Golden Child at the two-character play Equal, and Inseong of SF9, MJ of ASTRO, Nam Woo-hyun of Infinite, and Lee Hong-gi of F.T. Island at Jack the Ripper. We already know they can sing, but they are also serious actors. Fans worldwide can’t wait to see their performances. So, let’s take a glance at the three hottest plays.
Jekyll & Hyde
A Steady Seller More Popular in Korea than Mainland Broadway
Jekyll & Hyde, a musical based on the novel Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, gained more popularity in Korea than mainland Broadway, thanks to the number “This is the Moment.” The number plays when the play reaches its climax after a fast and bold pace of the reinterpreted modern version of the play.
Dr. Jekyll, famous for his outstanding skills and competence, believes he can cure hospitalized schizophrenics once he separates the good and evil inside them. People try to stop him, warning him that this treatment is a challenge against God, but Dr. Jekyll is not discouraged and decides to be the test subject himself. However, the test fails as the “Evil Jekyll” subsists inside to take over, whenever he can, to get revenge on the opponents of his experiment.
The official OST was sold out promptly upon its release, and we see Korea’s most representative musical actors in the second lineup as well, including Jeon Dong-seok, Park Eun-tae, and Kai. The stage itself seems to be symbolizing the contrast between good and evil by dividing bright and dark lights, and impactive stage props, such as mirrors all over the stage and a threatening high stack of experiment tools, get you overwhelmed.

Jack the Ripper
The Bible of Classic Musicals
In 1888, five women were killed one by one in Whitechapel in East London of the United Kingdom, but the murderer was not caught. Jack the Ripper is originally a Czech musical with a storyline based on the infamous killer Jack the Ripper and his victims. However, 90% of the plot, songs, and stage were localized and reborn in Korea, winning the honor of being a “perfect masterpiece that surpasses the original.”
Anderson, a corrupt detective, tries to track down Jack, the most notorious serial killer of all time, to make money. He runs into Daniel, a surgeon, who insists that he knows the killer. Daniel claims to have met Jack the Ripper, being introduced by Gloria, a prostitute, while searching for organs to use in organ transplant research. Jack tries to kill many women, including Gloria, Daniel says. Daniel had planned a bright future with Gloria, but his dream was shattered as something horrible happened to Gloria after she reported to the police about the murderer. His hatred toward Jack is evident as he was broken up with her because of the incident. However, even after the help of Daniel, another murder case arises.
Don’t miss the thrilling journey of finding clues one by one to unveil Jack’s identity. The stages dynamically shift to and fro from the gloomy streets of the U.K. in the 19th century and flamboyant performances, such as popping dance performances by prostitutes.
