One of Gwangju’s charms is its numerous cultural festivals. Among them, the most prominent is the Gwangju Biennale, held every two years from April to July. It provides an opportunity to appreciate contemporary art pieces by over 80 artists from around the world. In addition, there are various other festivals and events, such as the Design Biennale (September to November), Gwangju Handmade Fair (June), and the Gwangju Chungjang World Festival of Memories (October). Visiting during the scheduled events will make your trip even more enjoyable. Chungjang-ro Street, the main shopping hub in Gwangju, is lined with a variety of shops that offer everything from everyday clothing to traditional Hanbok and wholesale items. Nearby, the historic Yangdong Market, established in the 1910s and boasting a tradition of over 110 years, is a sprawling traditional market. With more than 340 stores, it offers an extensive range of products including agricultural items, seafood, and general goods.
