    Gunsan intercity bus terminal

The city of Gunsan, located less than three hours by bus from Jeonju, is a city in which its architecture speaks and tells us stories. Through the structures found in the historic center, we can learn how the country has evolved in recent times.

The city is split into two parts: the old and the modern.

The old part of Gunsan is marked by the architecture of the first half of the 20th century, built during the time of the Japanese occupation. For this reason, there are still many Japanese-style buildings that are points of interest for tourists.

    Facade of Hirotsu House

    Hirotsu House garden

The first Japanese-style building we found was the Hirotsu House, a Japanese-style house in Sinheung-dong. The house was built using traditional Japanese design. It is believed that a powerful Japanese man was in charge of the Hirotsu House’s rice fields, making this house a symbol of the Japanese oppression of the Korean people during the occupation. At that time, the Korean people of Gunsan were responsible for harvesting rice, to be exported by ship to Japan.

    Goudang Guesthouse

Close by, you will find the famous Goudang Guesthouse. This guesthouse and the surrounding homes recreate the Japanese style of living in Korea during that period. In the same neighborhood, you can also find the Stripe Museum of Gunsan, where you can see the torture the people of Gunsan were subjected to.

Dongguksa Temple as seen through the eyes of a young victim, a comfort woman.

To finish our walkthrough of the old part of Gunsan, we arrived at the emblematic Dongguksa Temple, a Buddhist temple that is characterized by Japanese-style architecture. Also, there is a Korean Buddhist temple next to Dongguksa Temple for those who want to appreciate the differences between the two.

Gunsan Modern Art Museum and Gunsan Modern History Museum

    Jimpo Marine War Park

Leaving the older side, we arrived at the modern section of Gunsan, the port area.

Tourists flock here to get a view of Jinpo Marine War Park. The park is a space where people can tour the inside and outside of tanks, airplanes and ships that belonged to the Korean military.

    Modern Architecture Museum

Our next stop was the Modern Architecture Museum, the former Chosun Bank Branch, followed by the Modern Art Museum.
Finally, we experienced the modernity of the Gunsan Modern History Museum, which reflects the evolution of the city and the country, making it clear that within Gunsan we can travel from the modernism of the present to the antiquity of the beginning of the 20th century.

Traveler Tip: If you are looking for a more relaxed and less historical activity in Gunsan, you can also find the Teddy Bear Museum, which is open to everyone.
