  • Bicycle, the smartest way to travel the city

When you are heading to a place during your trip that is difficult to be reached by public transportation or a little far to walk, a bicycle is an excellent choice. You can rent a bike in various cities in Korea and nice bike paths are established in those areas for you to enjoy riding. In particular, if you ride along the Hangang River in Seoul, you will be rewarded with beautiful views that combine the city's skyline and lighting on bridges.

    Types of public bicycles

Public bicycle services in Korea are divided into those operated by local governments and those operated by private companies. Public bikes are only available in certain cities such as Seoul and Daejeon, and they are inexpensive. A notable public bike service is Seoul's "Ttareungi" whose name originates from "Ttareung," which, in Korean, is the sound of a bell installed on a bicycle. You can easily find them throughout Seoul and even foreigners can conveniently use them.

Bike services run by companies can be used in broader areas than public bikes. You can use such a service after installing the app of an operating company, and the most popular service is "Kakao T Bike" run by Kakao. It is available in over 50 regions around the country and there are also areas where you can use an electric bicycle so be sure to check it out before use!

Q1> What are things to remember when riding a bike in a city?

You must wear a helmet when riding a bike. Also, when you cross a street at a crosswalk, you need to get off the bike and walk across with it. When you ride on a bike path, you need to keep to the right. Finally, it is strictly prohibited to ride a bike under the influence.

Q2> How should I ride if there are only roads for cars and pedestrians and no bike path is installed?

You need to ride your bike on the rightmost edge of the road for cars. However, you may not ride a bike in sections where bicycle traffic is prohibited by a safety sign. In inevitable cases such as on a damaged road or construction zone, you may ride a bike at the edge of the sidewalk but you must not interfere with pedestrian traffic.

Tip Want to move faster? There are shared scooters!

"Shared kick boards" are a good means of transportation if you wish to move fast and conveniently in the city center. It serves as an excellent choice in case you have to make several public transportation transfers or walk for a long time even if it is a short distance. Shared kick boards can be used only if you hold a Korean or international driver's license. Safety first when riding a shared kick board and wearing a helmet is a start!
A test operation of shared scooters is also on-going in certain areas (Gangnam, Seoul) and only those who have Korean driver's licenses are able to use them.
