Staying at an ocean-view room of Donghae Boyang Hot-Spring Convention Hotel can be a time of healing in itself, but a great view of the sea is not the only thing the hotel has to offer. It is designated as a national hot spring for its health benefits by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, officially making it a place of relaxation and healing for both the body and mind. What makes it unique is that in addition to the mineral-rich hot spring water from an aquifer under the seabed, it also has edible salt-containing hot spring water that has been filtered through a layer of loess approximately 900 meters below ground. Combination of these two types of hot spring water is what makes Donghae Boyang Hot-Spring so special and why most of its wellness programs such as Aqua Fitness, Detox Spa, and Flow Walking take place in the water for low-impact activities that anyone can enjoy.

Wellness in Special Water from Loess and Sea

Some of the wellness programs require reservations while others are walk-ins. Flow Walking and Detox Spa are walk-in programs that anyone can enjoy at any time. A special detox program only available in the country is at Donghae Boyang Hot-Spring Convention Hotel: Hot and cold baths in a special type of water called “Jijangsu.” Jijangsu is clear hot spring water that is naturally filtered through loess. For centuries in Korea and China, it’s been known for its health benefits as recorded in both the Korean medical encyclopedia known as Donguibogam (Principles and Practices of Eastern Medicine) and the Chinese pharmaceutical encyclopedia, Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica).
Taking hot and cold baths in jijangsu is simple: Submerge your body in the cold water and then in the hot water and go back and forth between the cold and hot tub about 7 to 9 times. Stay in each of the tub for approximately 1 minute before moving on to the other one, but make sure not to do the program more than 3 times because overdoing it can cause health problems. The 1-minute rule is because it takes about 25 seconds for blood to travel from the heart to the rest of the body before returning to the heart. You start and end from the cold water in order to tighten your pores so that you don’t lose water, salt, and electrolyte through sweating. Using this program in the morning can help reduce fatigue while using it at night can help you relax. Make sure you use the program at least one hour after a meal.
Flow Walking is a program of walking in the pool. You start by walking at the center of the pool and after walk towards the shower at the end of the pool where you can take a whole body shower and neck massage shower to relax the stiff muscles, and then bathe on the underwater bed along the Relax Lining. Repeat this process 3 to 5 times. This program has moisturizing and revitalizing effects because it’s done in seawater rich in minerals and salt.

Healthy Activities with Water Dumbbells, Pool Noodles and Foam Rollers

Aqua Fitness and Foam Rollers Pilates are for reservations only. Aqua Fitness is a type of aerobic exercise done in water. Water walking and other types of aqua aerobics using a tool can be more effective than land aerobics in terms of workout benefits, muscle strengthening, cardiorespiratory endurance, and body fat reduction. You can do them even if you don’t know how to swim because the water level is only at shoulder height. What’s more, you can do the exercises regardless of your age because the buoyancy and the resistance of the water reduce the strain on your joints.
The exercise program consists of a 10-minute warm-up followed by a 30-minute aerobics, and 10-minute cool down, for a total of between 50 and 60 minutes. There is an instructor who can help you use the water dumbbells and pool noodles and have fun with them while working out in the water. It is a good idea to bring your own swimming suit, cap, and goggles. If you didn’t bring your own swimwear, you can rent them at the pool for a fee.
Not all the programs at Donghae Boyang Hot-Springs Convention Hotel take place in the water. Foam Roller Pilates is an indoor program using a cylindrical massage tool called a foam roller. It consists of a 25-minute stretching and 25-minute of muscle strengthening routines. It is beneficial for correcting your spine, improving blood circulation, and eliminating toxins. It helps remove tension from your body and makes breathing easier, which can help you have a good night’s sleep. This training program only costs 15,000 won per person but requires a minimum of at least 15 participants to start.
