Yeongdong, Chungcheongbuk-do, is where the three provinces of Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang converge, brimming with a great variety of charms. Yeongdong’s brand slogan, “Rainbow Yeongdong”, reflects this diversity. A wellness space that mirrors this colorful variety opened in Yeongdong in July 2023: the Yeongdong Rainbow Healing Center. The architecture, which replicates the natural beauty of Yeongdong, along with the space designed for the health and enjoyment of the mind, body, and spirit, makes one feel relaxed just by being there.
The Rainbow Healing Center is located within the Yeongdong Rainbow Healing Tourist Area, a complex dedicated to health and wellness. The 1.75 million m2 site includes the Rainbow Healing Center, a cultural complex, Illite Resort Village, Yeongdong Wine Tunnel, and the Fruit Country Theme Park. The Healing Center focuses on Yeongdong’s natural environment for relaxation.
The reason the Rainbow Healing Center stands out is the building itself captures the essence of Yeongdong’s nature. Light, wind, water, and stone work in organic harmony to create a relaxing atmosphere. The Rainbow Healing Center addresses the issue of rural population decline by creating an interior space where children can laugh and play.
Perhaps the standout feature of the complex is the Children’s Healing Museum on the B2 floor. This playground supports the Rainbow Healing Center like the roots of a tree. The space is designed and decorated from a children’s perspective, brimming with whimsical joy. There's a book playground where children can be noisy, a giant playground shaped like a pizza dough, and a ball pit filled with peach-colored balls that evoke the famous peaches of Yeongdong.
Take the staircase up to find the Healing Forest Garden, open to all. Situated in the inner courtyard of the Healing Center, the Healing Forest Garden is illuminated by natural sunlight streaming through large windows. Follow the staircases to find spaces where you can take a breather with a good book. In front of that is a lush bamboo grove, which leads to the Healing Foot Spa Zone.
One floor above the first-floor lobby is the most popular space in the Rainbow Healing Center: the Personal Healing Zone, which offers rest through various forms of thermotherapy. The space is decorated with cypress, charcoal, and illite. Warm benches with illite floors are particularly popular among seniors. Illite is said to have antibacterial and purifying properties, and Yeongdong-gun has the largest illite deposit in the world.
Illite Mats can also be found in the Relax Room on the second floor. This is the only space in the Rainbow Healing Center that requires an additional fee beyond the entrance fee. However, because the room offers comfort at reasonable prices, many visitors opt to pay a bit more for the space.
Another great place to relax is the Meditation Pond, which reflects Yeongdong’s four seasons. As its name suggests, the room centers around a water basin symbolizing a pond, surrounded by comfortable chairs. The space is perfect for enjoying a tranquil view of Yeongdong’s blue skies and leisurely floating white clouds.
Another space in the Rainbow Healing Center allows you to focus on yourself: the Garden of Light, which houses art installations by contemporary artist Lee Kyong. It’s a great place to spend some time alone and take some fantastic pictures. Each of the three spaces represents the earth, wind, and mountains of the Yeongdong region, giving each a unique charm. Rather than rushing through, we recommend taking your time to fully experience the messages of the space.
After exiting the Garden of Light, you can pass through a door leading to the outside and the Wind Stairs. Take the steps up, enjoying the view of Yeongdong’s skies, to reach the Rooftop Garden. The Rooftop Garden offers a great view of the Rainbow Healing Tourist Area. The Sky Stairs, in particular, are a must-visit photo area for visitors, as they perfectly frame the mountain ridges unfolding like screens. From the top of the stairs, you can truly enjoy the beauty of Yeongdong’s nature at the intersection between the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range and the Geumgang River.
As its name suggests, the Rainbow Healing Center offers a meditation program for healing. The program is available for an hour every weekend (Saturday, Sunday), from 15:00 to 16:00, for both children and adults. Adults have access to a variety of thematic activities, from tea ceremony meditations to walking meditations around the center, wine meditation, foot bath relaxing meditation, and wind meditation. Children’s meditation programs focus on building concentration, exploring their capabilities, will meditation, breathing control with friends, and stimulating growth plates. Each program has a capacity of about 10 to 12 participants and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The programs are free of charge, and the themes and activities may vary.

Yeongdong Fruit Theme Park is also part of the Rainbow Healing Tourist Area. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the Yeongdong Fruit Theme Park from the Rainbow Healing Center. The theme park is dedicated to the five fruits that make Yeongdong-gun a celebrated producer of fruits, and includes the Rainbow Arboretum, home to 213 species of subtropical plants, and the Banana Land. Depending on the season, visitors can take part in fruit-picking experiences with plums, peaches, grapes, apples, pears, and other fruits. Additionally, there are cooking experiences such as toast-making, cookie-baking, and pizza-making, as well as processing experiences like making fruit juice and jam.

Founded during the Silla Period, Banyasa Temple offers a unique view: the Banyasa Tiger, located on the slope next to the temple. The Tiger is formed out of crushed stones that have weathered over millennia to shape a tiger. In summer, the red blossoms of the crepe myrtle in the temple create a spectacular sight. The temple is also famous for its Templestay program, which includes leisurely walks, meditations, and tea ceremonies with Buddhist monks. Visitors can also participate in a variety of Buddhist temple activities, such as Buddhist meals, ceremonies, and 108 bows, making the program highly satisfying for visitors.
