Seomun Market

Seomun Market in Daegu is one of the largest traditional markets in Korea. It is divided into six districts, each of which sells specialized products.

Seomun Market was quite different from the traditional market image I had in mind. The large, well-organized stores gave the market a unique charm that set it apart.

When it comes to traditional markets, food is a must-try. At Seomun Market, be sure to sample a variety of delicious options, including flat mandu, fish cakes, chapssal sujebi (hand-pulled sticky rice dough soup), kalguksu (noodle soup), and ssiat hotteok (syrup-filled pancake with seeds).

Seomun Market has many shops specializing in fabrics and clothing. In addition, the market offers a wide variety of products, so be sure to visit and pick up some must-have items during your trip.

St. Geundae Bakery

Sweet red bean buns from St. Geundae Bakery are made using handmade red bean paste that is freshly cooked every day. In addition to the buns, you can also enjoy handmade red bean shaved ice and modern red bean milk, both featuring the same delicious red bean paste.

There are tables at the back of the first floor where you can relax and enjoy the bread you purchased.

In addition to the sweet red bean bun, which is one of the must-have items for a trip to Daegu, St. Geundae Bakery also sells a variety of other breads. There’s even a bread shaped like Daegu’s signature fruit, the apple, which is a great souvenir from your trip to Daegu.

Dongseong-ro Street

Dongseong-ro Street, Daegu’s main downtown area, is home to department stores and small and large shops. It is connected to Jungangno Station on Subway Line 1 and Banwoldang Station on Lines 1 and 2, making it convenient to visit by public transportation.

There is also Spark Land, a landmark in Dongseong-ro, which is an indoor theme park shopping mall with various amusement facilities and a Ferris wheel where you can take a panoramic view of Dongseong-ro Street.

In Dongseong-ro, you can find the Dongseong-ro Tourist Information Center, which provides a convenient space for tourists visiting Daegu. The center provides tourist information, interpretation services, tours, guidebooks, and souvenirs.

On the first floor of the center, there are 18 kinds of tourist souvenirs that capture the charm of Daegu. Among them, I found a souvenir called mogeo (wooden fish), which was inspired by the wind chime hanging in the Daeungjeon Hall of Donghwasa Temple.

Donghwasa Temple

Built during the Silla Dynasty, Donghwasa Temple has a history of over 1,500 years and is home to a variety of national heritage.

When the wind blows, the pendulum hanging in mogeo produces a clear, beautiful sound that is believed to purify the mind of practitioners and serve as a reminder of the Buddha’s teachings.

Visit Donghwasa Temple and listen to the soothing sounds of the mogeo echoing through the temple.

Palgongsan Cable Car

Not far from Donghwasa Temple, you can ride the Palgongsan Cable Car, which offers beautiful views of Daegu.

When you arrive at the summit station by cable car, you’ll find the Wish Rock, known for making your wish come true. There are flags on which place names are written in speech bubbles. Make a wish in front of the rock and enjoy the open view while feeling the charm of Palgongsan Mountain.
