If you had to choose one place in Seoul that feels truly Korean, Bukchon Hanok Village would be it.
Located between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace, this area was once home to royalty and noble families during the Joseon Dynasty. Even today, around 600 hanok houses remain, filling the alleys with history and tradition.
As you walk along the gentle curves of tiled roofs, an essential feature of traditional Korean architecture, you’ll encounter a scene that feels as if time has briefly stood still in the middle of the city.
In this guide, we’ll introduce everything you need to fully enjoy Bukchon, from scenic walking routes to cafés with Korean tea culture, and beautifully curated souvenir shops.
Your Bukchon walk begins at Anguk Station (Line 3), Exit 2 or 3.
Follow the stone wall of Changdeokgung Palace, and after a short uphill walk, you’ll reach Wonseo-dong Workshop Street, where traditional artisans have their studios. From there, continue deeper into the village and you’ll arrive at Gahoe-dong, the main area where hanok houses are densely gathered. At the entrance, be sure to stop by the nearby Bukchon Cultural Center. This public hanok, located at the beginning of the village, offers useful information about Bukchon and also provides a small resting area for visitors.
As you keep walking uphill, you’ll soon come across one of Bukchon’s most iconic views.
When you reach the alley at Gahoe-dong 31, turn around to see a wide, open view of hanok rooftops with Namsan Tower rising beyond them. This current spot was also featured in K-pop Demon Hunters, where the characters Lumi and Jinwoo walked together, Do not miss the chance to take a photo!
However, keep in mind that many residents still live in Bukchon. Quiet and respectful behavior is strongly encouraged. Visiting hours are limited from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so please plan accordingly.
