Pohang, a window to the world’s oceans

Located at about the midpoint of the eastern shore of Korea, Pohang is a port city located close to Busan to the south, Gangneung/Donghae/Sokcho to the north, and Gyeongju/Daegu to the west. Pohang’s old port (Guhang) at the city center was opened in 1914 and was elevated to an international port in 1962. With the founding of POSCO, a global steelmaker, a new port (Sinhang) was opened in Pohang in 1969, capable of handling large vessels up to 100,000 tons in tonnage. Cruise vessels are anchored at Pohang’s Yeongilman Port, which was opened in 2020. Yeongilman Port is a large logistics port with 10 docks and is also the starting point of cruises to Ulleungdo Island. The newly constructed International Passenger Terminal, completed in 2024, offers a spacious and convenient facility, complete with a dedicated dock for international passenger travel.

Pohang, a port city
with legends of the sea

Pohang’s Yeongilman Port is a rising name among the cruise ports of call on Korea’s
eastern shore. Because of its proximity to Russia and Japan, it is situated in an
advantageous position for the pan-East Sea economic area’s cruise business. After
all, its location grants proximity to ports of call in western Japan, such as Maizuru,
Fukuoka, Sakaiminato, and Sasebo, as well as Russian ports of call at Vladivostok and
the Kamchatka Peninsula. Another sea route of note connects Pohang with Shanghai and Hangzhou in China, Keelung City in Taiwan, and Okinawa in Japan.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, cruise packages departing from Pohang connected the city to Vladivostok, and in 2023, a cruise package from Pohang was launched on a route that connects Okinawa, Miyakojima, and Keelung City.
The completion of the International Passenger Dock in 2020 and the structural
reinforcement of breakwater facilities in front of the International Passenger Dock
completed the infrastructural works required to commence the operation of the
International Passenger Terminal at Yeongilman Port. Now, all that remains is for
Pohang’s Yeongilman Port to set sail toward the seas as the central piece in pan-East
Sea cruise tourism.
