  • A tall building with a black exterior wall catches your eye among the numerous accommodations.
It is “Hotel Bom.” Recently renovated through remodeling,
this place has reopened from its former name of “Sunrise Hill” to a new name
that expresses the sincerity of always serving customers with attitudes that are warm like spring (bom).
I have my reasons for choosing this place at the alley of accommodations in Naun-dong, Gunsan.
It was because of the plaque with “Korea Quality” engraved at the hotel’s entrance.
This shiny plaque serves as an icon of trust.
I could be assured that this was the most reliable accommodation option among the many lining the streets.

The first thing I noticed when I checked into the hotel was that it was “clean.”
Although it doesn’t have a splendid appearance and you can’t enjoy a great view,
the cozy atmosphere and neatly laid bedding gives a feeling of coziness beyond simple tidiness.
I rushed inside and threw myself onto the bed.
The comfortable bed was more than enough to soothe my travel fatigue.

After dawdling in bed for as long as possible, I looked around the room.
It was a pleasant accommodation for a single person to use.
There was a soft bed to lie down on comfortably,
and a Cloud sofa for one person where you could sit comfortably and read a book or work.
Overall, there was no feeling of excessiveness, and it was a practical space that only had what was really needed.
Another few steps away, a clean, white-tone bathroom appeared.
The color was one that would appear dirty even if it was only slightly stained,
but I was amazed at how it maintained its cleanliness without a single stain.

The amenities for guests on one side stood out.
Even though items such as slippers hung in rows, rolled-up white towels stacked on top of each other,
and hair products used to dry and comb hair were not grandiose,
I was impressed with how each item was clean and well-maintained.
In particular, the item that stood out the most was the robe.
Other places usually hang robes in the closet, but I found it impressive that it was sterilized and neatly packaged here.
I could deeply feel that the hotel was careful and considerate of customers
who were more concerned with cleanliness because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the first floor, there was a resting place for guests,
and a breakfast service was in operation.
Water, coffee, ice, bread, and jam are provided.
Therefore, if you want to simply fill your stomach,
it’s a good idea to stop by the place for a while.

Finally, to summarize Hotel Bom’s characteristics,
it bears the feeling of a neat business hotel equipped with everything you need,
even though there is nothing flashy or outstanding overall.
If you do not think too much about the view of the accommodation or the facilities,
such as a jacuzzi, it will be a “good value” accommodation for anyone.

We Remember Our Past Where History Sleeps.
    Time Travel Village in Gunsan

If you drive 10 minutes from the accommodation, you will reach the Time Travel Village.
Time here seems to have stopped several decades ago.
During the Japanese occupation, Gunsan was used as a major route for plunder,
and traces of Japanese exploitation and struggles remain throughout the city as they are.
It is a representative “dark tourism” city in Korea.

Someone says, “Why do people leave buildings such as the colonial Japanese house as they are?”
However, it may be right to view this as the history we must bear
and an object to be taken as a lesson so as not to repeat itself again.

In this way, you can often see buildings that represent Japanese architectural styles,
    including Hirotsu House, Yeomirang,
and the residence of Joseon Transportation Company,
in various places in the Time Travel Village.
The Time Travel Village is now used as a guesthouse,
a tourist destination that provides a resting place for travelers,
and a site for education where you can learn about the local history.

There is not only dark tourism here. Gunsan is also famous as a filming location.
There is the Chowon Photo Studio that appeared in Christmas in August,
and you can also tour the Japanese-style houses in Sinheung-dong,
where Tazza: The High Rollers and “General’s Son” were filmed.
Walk through the Time Travel Village like a protagonist in the movie as much as you like.

If you take a short walk from the Time Travel Village,
you will arrive at the Gyeongam-dong Railroad Village.
It is a tourist attraction created with antique colors on the railroad village
and a travel destination that makes you immerse yourself in the memories of those days.
It is a travel destination that makes our parents’ generation recall their childhood memories
and our own think about the scenes of that time.
All around the village, you will find junk food you ate as a child and cute murals.
How about immersing yourself in childhood innocence for a moment while walking along the railroad tracks?
