Pension lodging facilities in Korea have greater diversity and individuality than one may expect. From small-sized pensions to luxury pool villa pensions rivaling high-end resorts, there are countless styles and prices to choose from. Many pensions have their own themes and one-of-a-kind interiors, and thus have become the vacation destination for some travelers. Some pensions are equipped with an outdoor pool, a private pool, pet- or children-friendly amenities, or even a jjimjilbang (sauna) in each room. There are also many pensions with sensuous, Instagrammable vibes. If you want to check out the accommodation trends of Korea, spending a night in a pension is recommended.

    Unique-themed pensions
    • Pool villa pension: Pool villa pensions with individual swimming pools are popular nationwide.  Pool villas offer a unique charm of their own with scenic views, such as an ocean or a mountain view, offering an opportunity to relax in a luxurious manner.

    • Jjimjilbang pension: Jjimjilbang is a sauna facility made for people to sweat out and relax, typically operated as large-scale business. Jjimjilbang pensions incorporate these facilities as an amenity by providing a private sauna room in guest rooms for guests to conveniently enjoy the jjimjilbang experience and privacy during their stay. A hot private sauna is an excellent way to relieve stress and fatigue after a long day.

    • Kids pension: Kids pension is a great option for family trips with children. These pensions offer the atmosphere similar to that of a theme park or a water park with various entertaining facilities that are both kids-friendly and fun.

Notes for staying at a pension

    • Most Koreans enjoy samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) barbecue when staying at a pension. Some pensions provide barbecue equipment for rental or even prepare a full course meal with meat and side dishes. However, there are a few pensions that do not offer barbeque options so visitors are advised to check in advance.

    • Although there are many kids- and pet-friendly pensions, some pensions do not accept children or pets.

    • Some pensions offer breakfast either for free or with a fee.
