On July 28, 2023, Incheon International Airport released the SMARTPASS service, utilizing facial recognition software for a faster departure. Travelers who opt to use SMARTPASS can pass through the departure and boarding areas without having to show their passport or boarding pass. The pass is currently accepted at 6 departure gates and 16 boarding gates in Incheon Airport Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Concourse.
To use the SMARTPASS, travelers must register their facial information at least 30 minutes beforehand, either through the ICN SMARTPASS mobile application or a self check-in kiosk at the airport. Once registered, the information can be saved and used for up to 5 years. Of particular importance, users should be aware that they must still carry their passport and boarding pass within the airport.
The SMARTPASS is expected to make the identification process at departure check-in faster, as well as increase airport security by catching counterfeits and forgeries. This is the first step in Incheon International Airport’s plan for their app expansion, with additional functions such as self check-in, self bag-drop, and duty-free purchases to be added by April 2025.
