What comes to mind when you think of DMZ travel? Paju? Cheorwon? If you want to travel slightly further east, you'll think of Goseong! However, the place I’d like to introduce today is Yanggu, Gangwon-do! It is a county with a population of 20,000 and seven villages. Throughout North Korea, it is also called the "belly button of the Korean Peninsula" because of its central location on the Korean Peninsula. This nickname is so cute that Yanggu has a "Belly Button Village" and a mascot, Belly-Button-Boy!
What makes Yanggu special? If you go up the Dutayeon Trekking course, you can see Mt. Geumgang which is in North Korea! Did you know tours of Mt. Geumgang were allowed until 2008? However, an unpleasant incident occurred in 2008, so South Korean tourists were no longer allowed to go there. Although we can no longer climb Mt. Geumgang, I am just thankful that we can see it from afar
