Gwangju has a long history at the center of Korea’s democratic and human rights movements, including the Gwangju Democratic Uprising, which was inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2011. In addition, Gwangju’s Mudeungsan Geopark was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018, and the city was included in the UNESCO Creative City Network in 2019, leading to Gwangju being called the “UNESCO Triple-crown City.”

Artists and art-lovers from across the globe come to Gwangju each year for the Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju Design Biennale, and the Gwangju Chungjang Festival. While here, be sure to try some of the tasty local foods the area is known for, including the Gwangju Top Fives: kimchi, hanjeongsik (Korean table d’hote), Mudeungsan boribap (barley rice), tteokgalbi (grilled galbi patties), and ori tang (duck soup).

1. From Incheon International Airport

1) Airport limousine bus: From Incheon International Airport to Gwangju Bus Terminal (Approx. 4 hr 15 min)
2) Bus + Train: Take bus no. 6770 from Incheon International Airport to Gwangmyeong Station (Approx. 50 min) then take the KTX from Gwangmyeong Station to Gwangju-Songjeong Station (Approx. 1 hr 40 min)

2. From Seoul

1) Train: Take the KTX from Seoul Station to Gwangju-Songjeong Station (Approx. 2 hr) or take the SRT from Seoul Suseo Station to Gwangju-Songjeong (Approx. 1 hr 50 min)
2) Bus: Take an express bus from Seoul Central City Bus Terminal to Gwangju Bus Terminal (Approx. 3 hr 20 min)
