Car Rentals

Seoul and most of the big cities in Korea have well-developed public transportation systems, making it easy and convenient to travel around the country. However, it may not be as easy to get around Jeju Island and the smaller rural towns due to the absence of subway lines and the infrequent bus services; in such cases, renting a car is recommended. There are numerous car rental companies in Korea and renting a car is relatively easy. The largest car rental services are KT Kumho Rent-a-Car and AJ Rent-a-Car. Both companies have branches throughout Korea and also abroad. Many of the car rental services are clustered around the major traffic points such as Incheon International Airport, Gimpo International Airport, provincial airports, KTX (high-speed train) stations, major railway stations and express bus terminals. Branch information can be found on each car rental company's website.

[Rental Requirements]

1. Driver's license, passport and credit card

You must have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) or a valid driver's license issued in Korea. An international driving permit (IDP) allows citizens of a foreign country with a valid driver's license to drive while in Korea. You must obtain your IDP in the same country that issued your driver's license.

Some car rental companies require both the IDP and the local driver's license (i.e., driver's license issued by the country of residence), so it is advised to check the rental requirements of the relevant companies in advance. A passport is necessary for identification purposes. A copy of your passport may also be needed to complete your request. Vehicle rental fees must be paid with your own credit card.

Those with a Type 2 driver's license issued in Korea can drive a car carrying up to up to nine passengers, while those with a Type 1 driver's license issued in Korea can drive larger vehicles accommodating ten or more passengers. For IDP holders, the type of vehicle you are permitted to drive will depend on the classification stamped on your IDP.

* Notes

1. The names on your International Driving Permit (IDP) and your passport must be identical. If the names differ, your driving permit will not be accepted.

2. International Driving Permits (IDP) recognized in Korea are only those issued by a member state of the Geneva Convention and the Vienna Convention. Your IDP can be used for up to one year after entering Korea (the IDP itself is valid for one year from the date of issue).
Note: China is not a member state of the Geneva Convention and the Vienna Convention, but an IDP issued in Hong Kong is accepted in Korea. IDPs issued anywhere else in China do not have validity in Korea.
*For Hong Kong residents, the KTO Hong Kong Office, in cooperation with local travel agencies, offers a rental car travel package for trips to Jeju.

☞ Click here to check the member states of the Vienna Convention (Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese)

** Don't forget to check in advance if the international driving permit or driver's license issued in your country has validity in Korea!

2. Driver Qualifications

The following are based on AJ Rental Car's rental requirements (most Korean car rental companies would have more or less similar requirements).

* For small or medium cars: must be 21 or older with a driving experience of at least one year.
* For SUV/RV or a 9 to 12-seater mini bus: must be 26 or older with a driving experience of at least three years.
* Large and premium car rental availability and requirements vary by company. It is recommended to check in advance if you plan to rent such vehicles.
* For those not paying with a credit card, cash or debit card payments must be accompanied by a third-party guarantor in possession of a credit card.

3. Additional Driver

If a renter wishes to add an additional driver to their rental, the additional driver has to register with the rental company as well for insurance purposes.

4. Insurance

Baseline rates for car rentals nearly always include the basic general insurance. However, the risk of damage to or theft of the car is not included in the coverage. Instead, renters can arrange for this independently or purchase an optional insurance or protection plan from the rental company. The vehicle will be covered by the insurance policy, but the renter will still be contractually liable to compensate the rental company for the loss of use (unavailability of a rental car and consequent loss of revenue by the rental company due to damage or theft). A per-day loss-of-use charge will be 50% of the car's daily rental fee. For instance, if a damaged vehicle with a daily rental rate of 50,000 won took three days to repair (50,000 x 3 = 150,000), the renter has to pay a 75,000 won (50% of 150,000) loss-of-use fee.

Notes

  1. 1. Discounts are available for those who sign up for a membership on the rental company's website. The discount rate varies by company.
  2. 2. To make sure you get the car model that you want, it is best to make a reservation (no reservation fee is charged) during the summer vacation season (mid July to mid August). If you want a rental car outside of this period, it is not necessary to make a reservation. Pay the full rental amount upon renting; additional charges can be paid upon returning the car.
  3. 3. Rental cars are generally two to three year-old cars. If the company provides you with an older car, you may request for a newer car.
  4. 4. The renter and a representative from the rental car company should conduct a thorough inspection of the car upon pick up. Make sure that the car's present condition matches the specifications in the contract. Every scratch or dent on a vehicle should be taken note of to avoid damage liabilities.
  5. 5. Vehicles must be returned with the same amount of fuel as at the start of the rental to avoid refueling charges. In the event that you return the car with more fuel than the quantity of fuel which is in the tank at the pickup time, you will not be refunded with value of this excess fuel. Hence, it is best to refill the tank at a fuel station close to the location for the car return.
  6. 6. There is no need to pay the rental fee upon making an online reservation. If you have already paid the rental fee, you can get a refund if you cancel up to 24 hours in advance of your designated pick-up time without penalty. If you cancel less than 24 hours before your pick-up time, a cancellation fee (10% of the rental fee) will be charged.
