| The Goesan Red Pepper Festival is held during harvest season to promote the excellence of peppers grown in Goesan, a major production area of Korea. The festival has numerous programs, including pepper-picking and fish-catching contest (using the bare hands), pepper recipe competition, pepper cooking contest, and garden pepper planting. Brightly colored and full of flavor, Korean peppers are a particularly popular agricultural product. This is a fun festival where visitors can taste or buy Korean peppers, and talk with farmers. Event Programs: Visitors can try catching freshwater fishes with their bare hands and releasing them back into the river. The events held on the Eve of the festival include the pepper-eating contest and the Mr. Pepper contest, to select a man to represent the Goesan pepper industry. The main contest events are simple but fun: the sack-of-peppers race, apple-peeling, apple-eating, pepper-picking and pepper-slicing. With so many small-scale events, every visitor is sure to enjoy at least one hands-on program. In addition to these programs, there are also exhibitions of bunjae(bonsai) pepper plant, farming equipment, and bunjae(bonsai) wildflowers. For a more traditional experience, try hanji crafts, the ceramics program, grilling corn and potatoes over a campfire, or preparing kimchi and rice-cakes. All these events are free of charge. Major Highlights: Most event programs appeared in the Korean movie “Don’t Believe Her”, starring Kang Dong-won and Kim Ha-neul. In the movie, Kang Dong-won entered the Mr. Pepper contest, showing off his talents and eating peppers. In fact, all of the pepper scenes were inspired by the programs of the Goesan Red Pepper Festival.
