Born and raised in the city of Gwangju, BTS member J-Hope is known to be outspoken about his love for his hometown. Lyrics like “I’m a Jeollanam-do Gwangju baby” and “062-518,” a region code in Gwangju, clearly shows his affection for Gwangju. He also honors the May 18th Gwangju Uprising every year via social media. Visit Gwangju to see the traces of J-Hope’s most fond memories from his childhood and discover how little Hoseok became J-Hope of BTS.

May 18th National Cemetery (국립 5·18 민주묘지)
A place dedicated to the May 18th Gwangju Uprising, an important event in modern Korean history. May 18th Gwangju Uprising was a democratic movement led by the people and many sacrifices were made during the desperate protest for freedom. J-Hope annually posts a message on his fan community platform in remembrance of the event.
Cheongchun Balsan Village (청춘발산마을)
A village that was settled by refugees after the Korean War, followed by garment factory workers, largely consisting of women, in the 1970s and ‘80s. Today, it is a tourist destination that’s been transformed thanks to the city regeneration project. Explore the village and you can find a mural of J-Hope at the top of a stairway with 108 steps.
Asia Culture Center (국립아시아문화전당)
A multicultural space dedicated to the research and exhibition of Asian culture. Only the old Jeollanam-do City Hall building, the main location of the May 18th Gwangju Uprising, stands on the ground floor and all the other exhibition buildings are built underground.
Yangnim-dong Penguin Village Craft Street (양림동 펭귄마을공예거리)
A charming village filled with much to see like murals and junk art. If you’re an ARMY, don’t forget to take a photo in front of the wall with a painting of J-Hope.
