The western coast of Korea has a uniquely diverse scenery full of irregular shorelines, coastal cliffs, and beaches full of stones. It is a place with a strongly defined tidal range, which sets it apart from the fine sand beaches and deep waters of the East Sea. Walk along the coast and enjoy the works of art that mother nature herself had sculpted over the untold years. Byeonsanbando National Park is divided into Naebyeonsan and Oebyeonsan areas, the former in the mountains and the latter by the sea. The itinerary taken on this trip will bring you along the Oebyeonsan area and the beauty of the west coast. Jeokbyeokgang Cliff and Chaeseokgang Cliff exemplify beauty realized by waves and currents over eons, through erosion and sedimentation. If anyone was to make a list of the most prolific and eclectic actresses in Korea right now, Kim Hye-yoon would be an indispensable part of that list. Starting as a child actress and making her way up to lead roles through K-dramas, web series, and films, Kim’s big break came with her supporting role in the popular show “SKY Castle (2018).” Since then, she has continued her work in historical dramas and short films. Kim Hye-yoon cites Buan as her recommendation for traveling, thanks to lasting memories she made in the region while on a filming trip.
“My work as an actress takes me across Korea to various filming sites, so sometimes I feel as if I am being sent on a business trip where I travel the country in search of hidden gems. The places that stayed with me the most in recent memory are Jeokbyeokgang Cliff and Chaeseokgang Cliff, in Buan, Jeollabuk-do, which I visited as a part of the historical show “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy (2021).” They are perfect places to enjoy the mysteries created by nature, like seaside cliffs and the sunset. There’s even a walking trail that you can take to see the two places, so you can just enjoy your walk leisurely there.”

Fisherman’s Coffee

A restaurant known for gimbap located 2 min away from Gyeokpohaebyeon Beach, this joint serves gimbap filled with fresh catch from the West Sea, such as shrimp and seaweed (kkosiraegi, or sea string: noodle-like seaweed full of dietary fiber and calcium). As its name suggests, the place also doubles as a café, so you can order coffee here as well.
