Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Heritages in 1997, nearly 200 years after its completion. Construction started in 1794 and lasted two years and six months. The walls stretch 5.52 kilometers around the world’s first planned city. Despite being such a historic site, the fortress isn’t seen as a typical, boring, old ruin; it is a center for leisure and enjoyment for local citizens and visitors alike!

Explore Hwaseong Fortress Hwaseong Fortress is the best example of fortified city construction in Korea. There are four main gates, each with their own style, through which 8 million visitors enter the fortress every year. There are many ways to explore the fortress. People with stamina can walk the full city wall, families with children will enjoy the stamp tour, and if you time your visit just right, you can join in on fun festivals and activities. Whatever method you choose, be sure to include the Hwaseong Temporary Palace in your visit! In addition to being a historical site, it was used for filming many historical dramas like “Dae Jang Geum (2003)” and “Love in the Moonlight (2016).”
Enjoy in comfort The vast size of Hwaseong Fortress can be daunting. The best way to see all the key points is by hopping aboard the Hwaseong Fortress Tourist Trolley! The trolley design is based on the car used by Emperor Sunjong, and the palanquins that carried previous kings of the Joseon dynasty. The trolley course passes major points of interest, including Yeonmudae Post, Hwahongmun Gate, and Hwaseomun Gate. If you’d like to see everything at once, check out Flying Suwon. This hot air balloon floats up 150 meters for a bird’s-eye-view of the fortress.
Relax like a local These days, Hwaseong Fortress is trending on Korean social media as a picnic location! Many young people from all over the country travel here in spring and fall to picnic beside the pond near Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion. The beautiful harmony of the traditional architecture with the greenery makes for amazing photos. If you want to know what to eat on your picnic, the answer is Suwon wang galbi (premium ribs), the city’s representative food! After eating, head to Haengnidan-gil Road for tasty desserts.
