Finding the best views at Busan cafes

Busan is an ideal weekend getaway from Seoul (or any other city in Korea). The KTX runs directly from Seoul Station and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. I happily take the KTX as it is so comfortable and the journey allows you to see the Korean countryside that you would not usually see if you flew to Busan.

Why are we visiting Busan? Seoul is frenetic and lovely in its own way, but sometimes I need the fresh ocean breeze against my face and to take a deep breath of the salty air. There is so much to see and do in Busan, one could spend a lot longer than a weekend there. In this article we will take a look at 5 of Busan’s most picturesque cafes that you should add to your itinerary.

Hotel Café of Fairfield by Marriott – Busan Songdo Beach

Not only is Busan home to the famous Gwangalli and Haeundae Beaches, it is also home to barista Jooyeon Jeon, the world barista champion 2019. This title is a huge honour and baristas train for years just to compete in the championships.

We did not have time to visit her cafe, Momos, but we did however get to taste a cup of coffee brewed with her coffee beans at the 2F cafe of Fairfield by Marriott hotel opposite Songdo Beach. The cafe has windows that span from floor to ceiling offering beautiful views directly on to Songdo Beach, and the cable cars taking a trip over the ocean. You can enjoy a slice of lemon pound cake, or a scoop of gelato with your cup of their signature blend, Es Chocolate. Costa Rica 40%, El Salvadore 35% , Guatamala 25 %. If the weather is good, enjoy the view from the comfy sofas, or order a take-out and sit on the beach. You could not get any closer to the beach. Songdo Beach is a lot quieter than the likes of Haeundae and Gwangalli Beach.

Sinki Yeoul

The island of Yongdo is connected via a bridge and a 10-minute cab drive away from Songdo Beach. You can find the Huinnyeoul Culture Village, a lovely ocean side community with a long stretch of walking paths and some very picturesque cafes.

We were amazed at how steep the hills on the island are, and were glad we decided to take a cab and not walk it. Sinki Yeoul is perched on the top of a hillside, with views right on to the azure blue ocean and the pathways going down to the colourful Huinnyeoul Culture Village. Sinki Yeoul has seating both indoors and outdoors. Both areas have a great view of the ocean. The outdoor area has a canopy over it so you can find some shade during the hot summer months. It was a rainy day when I visited, so we opted to sit inside. Even from inside, the views are glorious.

This is good spot to relax or take those holiday photos. Their signature beverage, Cream Vanilla Latte is a must try. It’s a creamy vanilla-based latte served with cinnamon powder, thick cream and Lotus cookies. The “Sinki” company has other locations in Busan, so if you have time, you should visit Sinki Sup too.

Scrab

On the other side of Yongdo island, you can find Scrab. This artistic space is part art gallery and part cafe. There is a lot to take in visually. There are small handmade items and artwork for sale as you walk in. The pastel toned candles for sale are made in Jeju and smell amazing. I bought one in each colour. Once you have walked through the craft area, there is an exhibition area.

Once you have walked through the exhibition area, you will come out on the other side of the hall. There you will see a tiered seating area with a huge window that lets in lots of sunshine and clear views of the Yongdo Harbour. From our window seat, we saw couples sitting on their camping chairs along the pavement whilst trying to catch some fish, a father and son fishing and many ships go by. The cafe is located on the second floor, so the slight elevation is ideal for looking out on to the harbour whilst enjoying a cup of hand drip coffee or tea. There are a lot of great Instagram-worthy photo zones, so there was quite a crowd of stylish people building up. If you would like to get a front row seat to enjoy the harbour view, I suggest you get there earlier.

Brown Hands Baekje

If you are looking for something a bit different from the sea views, and would like some historic views, head to the Baekje branch of Brown Hands cafe. Brown Hands Baekje is conveniently located a few minutes away from Busan Station. This four storey brick building has an interesting history. The building itself is a registered cultural heritage of Busan. Baekje is said to have been the first ‘Westernised’ hospital in Busan. It was built in the 1920’s and stood out as most buildings at that time were five stories. The hospital went bankrupt and went on to house many other establishments such as a Chinese restaurant, a housing quarter for Japanese troops and even a wedding hall. It is now home to Brown Hand cafe. Aspects of the building like the windows and doors have been carefully redesigned, crafted and updated, whilst still bearing a similar resemblance to its previous design. The cafe is worth visiting and provides an interesting peek into years gone by.

Choryang 845

Choryang feels like you are in the sky. It has views spanning across the city and ending at the ocean. The hill to get to the top is steep, so I suggest you take a bus or cab. This eatery specialises in coffee and brunch. The long industrial-like building has many seats and can get really busy. The overspill of people sometimes trickles even farther up the hill to their sister cafe, Choryang 1941. Their cafe focuses on milk-based drinks. Both cafes are enjoyable, however, the views from Choryang 845 are unbeatable. The remodelled factory has ginormous windows, the entirety of the wall. The location is great for a unique view of Busan Port.

Their brunch menu includes both Western style and Korean. We decided to try the Korean meal set and were blown away. It was really comforting and wholesome. The side dishes were all beautifully arranged on the tray. They also have a scrumptious selection of pastries and espresso based drinks.
