There are artsy experiential places all around Seoul and the suburbs that are perfect for creative inspiration and exploration. From creating works of art from upcycled materials to traipsing through forests to find beautiful artistic sculptures, these are some of the coolest places to visit if you want to see and experience art in and around Seoul with the kids. There are so many cool things to do with kids around Seoul, here are just five.

Jangheung Gana Art Park

Gana Art Park, previously named Jangheung Art Park, sits just northwest of Seoul in an area that is relatively off the beaten path. Established in 1984, there is an art museum, performance hall, and a children’s experience center, though everything on the grounds is quite experiential. After entering through the ticket booth, there is an outdoor sculpture park and playground where kids can run, jump, climb, and explore. From there, families can visit various buildings with colorful facades like: the Blue Space, the Red Space, or the Yellow Space. Each space houses a different experience but the one not to be missed is the Yellow Space.

Inside the Yellow Space is a piece called the “Air Pocket” designed by textile artist Toshiko Horiuchi Macadam. It’s a rainbow of nets that are ergonomically designed to help children move in a sense of balance and rhythm. The Jangheung Gana Art Park is an absolute blast for small children who are, literally, learning the ropes.

Heyri Art Village

Once the vision of a book publisher, the Heyri Art Village is a delightfully artsy area that is fun for both kids and the adults that tag along. Out west of Seoul in Paju, there are numerous galleries and experiences to partake in so it’s a village to visit again and again. Near each parking lot area is a booth with a list of the various experiences available from more artistic galleries to visit to soap making, miniature house building, pottery painting, and more. Once walking around the village, you’ll find even more experiences than were listed to enjoy. Walk from one end to another, enjoy the paths, get a bite to eat at one of the numerous restaurants or cafes, and let the kids take a class for an hour or two.

Anyang Art Park

South of Seoul, this outdoor art park is the perfect way to get the kids exploring mountain trails. Visit in the spring to see a cherry blossom-lined stream or visit in the summer and the kids can splash around in the stream flowing by after the walk. First, see the installations though. There are installations spread along the not-too-tall mountainside. The kids will have fun finding the mirrors and reflections, cave made from crates, dinosaurs, and then at the top is an observatory with epic views of the surrounding area. There are plenty of artistic works to find that it would make for a great place to spend a day outside. After the walk up, down, and all around, head back to the stream to find plenty of cafes and restaurants for an eat and a treat.

The trail isn’t too strenuous and the artworks which blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings are fun to find. Let the kids run ahead and try to spot the next one along the way. When it’s time to learn about recycling, reusing, and waste, the Seoul Upcycling Plaza is a must visit. Established in 2017, it is the world’s largest upcycling cultural complex and visitors can observe, learn, and experience the upcycling process. Let the kids learn about waste and environmental concerns and then work with one of the local artisans to make their own upcycled product. There are artisans on every floor of the complex so take a wander and let the children see what they’re attracted to. The complex also features a beautiful outdoor park as well as the Seoul Sewerage Science Museum so it is an attractive place to spend an entire day learning and creating.
