21 shops in the northeastern region of Seoul, Seongbuk-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, & Seodong-gu, were designated as Oragagae, a Korean play on words, in hopes that the old stores will stay in business for a very long time.
In order to be designated as Oragagae, a shop must have 30 years of history, be owned by two generations, or designated as an intangible cultural asset. Shops with master artisans of high skill and value are prioritized.
There are 21 shops in this year’s Oragagae; four shops each from Seongbuk-gu and Dongdaemun-gu, three each from Seongdong-gu and Jongno-gu, two each from Gangbuk-gu, Jungrang-gu, and Jung-gu, and one from Dobong-gu.
The shops have been organized into seven sub-themes revolving around the central theme of healing.
