One of Gangwon-do’s most representative festivals, Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is scheduled to take place from January 27 to February 16 in the area of Hwacheoncheon Stream. Although the festival officially begins on January 27, programs excluding those that take place on the ice (trout ice fishing, bare-hand fishing, sledding, etc.) are currently available to visitors.
The festival has great winter activities including trout fishing, bare-hand fishing and more on the frozen Hwacheoncheon Stream.
The main event, trout ice fishing, has a separate ice fishing location for international visitors. The most popular event is bare-hand fishing, in which participants change into clothes provided by the festival and jump into a pool barefoot to catch trout. If that’s a bit too much, visitors can participate in various winter sports such as sledding, bobsled and curling, as well as take pictures of trout-shaped lanterns at the Lantern Street Festival.
Visitors can reach the festival venue by taking an express bus, however it is recommended for international visitors to take the foreigner-exclusive shuttle bus that travels between Seoul and the festival grounds. Advance reservations are required for the shuttle bus; English & Chinese interpreters will be on the bus for passengers’ convenience.
