1:00 PM, Hiking Geomun Oreum

【 Photo: Trekking trail at Geomun Oreum 】

Geomun Oreum is one of the 368 volcanic cones spread throughout the island of Jeju-do. Located approximately 456 m above sea level, there is a large concentration of caves around this particular oreum. As the lava flowed down from Geomun Oreum to the coastline, it formed over 20 caves and lava tubes, the most popular of which are Gimnyeong Cave and Manjanggul Cave. Due to the high scientific and natural heritage value, it was registered as a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site in 2007.

To protect the natural environment, hikers must submit a reservation in advance before visiting. Three courses are available with varying lengths; the normal course is suitable for all, with a total length of around 1.8 km and taking about one hour to complete. For those who enjoy more of a challenge, the longer 5.5 km Crater Course takes approximately two and a half hours to complete and the full course is a 10-km long trekking trail that takes about three and a half hours to finish.

【 Photo: Scenery of Maze Land 】

Maze Land is a theme park with the world’s longest stonework maze. Covering a total of 5.3 km, the maze is designed to reflect the three items Jeju has long been famous for: stones, wind, and women. In addition to the maze, the park includes a Maze Puzzle Museum, where visitors can experience puzzles and mazes from the 14th century to the present.

The park is both environmentally friendly and healthy, using only natural rocks and trees from the island, which have outstanding health benefits. Jeju stones emit high levels of far-infrared light and the white cedar used produces a large amount of phytoncide, which works to kill bacteria and fungi. Visitors can enjoy solving the maze while being surrounded by a forest of green.

10:00 AM, Udo Sanho Beach (Seobinbaeksa Beach)

【 Photo: Sanho Beach(Seobinbaeksa Beach) on Udo Island 】

With a 1-kilometer long white sandy beach, Seobinbaeksa Beach is one of Udo Island’s eight scenic views. The beach is also called Sanho Beach, being believed to have been formed by the division of coral (‘sanho’ in Korean). However, the beach was not formed by coral, but from a buildup of broken red alga nodules and is the only beach of its kind in Asia. Red alga nodules are formed from hardened pieces of red alga such as laver and agar-agar weed.

The emerald ocean fading into a dark blue as it approaches the horizon blends well with the white sand to evoke a deep sense of admiration, earning this beach a regular spot in advertisements and films. The beach is lined with clean, pretty pensions and cafés that offer a relaxing environment with a splendid view.

【 Photo: Hagosudong Beach 】

Hagosudong Beach is located on the northeast side of Udo Island. The sand is very soft and visitors can easily gather beautiful shells as they walk along the shore. The water here is shallow, making this place the perfect destination for vacationing families with young children. The beach is particularly beautiful at night, with the dazzling lights of the anchovy fishing boats creating a spectacular scene as they reflect off the moving water.

【 Photo: Geommeolle Beach 】

Geommeolle Beach, meaning “black sand beach” in Jeju dialect, is very small beach with a length of approximately 100 m and is located below Udobong Peak. The beach cannot be accessed by road but you can view it either by taking the stairs or boarding a boat that will travel around the island.

At the end of the beach is Dongangyeonggul Cave, which was previously home to whales, according to legend. The people of Udo Island call the cave “whale’s blowhole.” At high tide, the cave entrance is hidden but at low tide, the water falls away to reveal this magical cave.

The highest point on Udo Island is Udobong Peak. If viewing Udo Island as its namesake of a cow lying down, Udobong Peak would be the top of the cow’s head. It is also known as Soemeori Oreum, which is Jeju dialect for “cow’s head mountain.” Climbing up to this vantage point allows a full view of the entire island, as well as the majestic Hallasan Mountain in the far distance and a number of closer oreums, including the nearby Seongsanilchulbong Peak. At the peak stands Udo Lighthouse, creating a beautiful scene with the deep blue of the ocean in the background.

Must-eats of Jeju!

Grilled beltfish & stewed beltfish

  • 【 Photo: Grilled beltfish 】
  • 【 Photo: Grilled beltfish 】
  • 【 Photo: Stewed beltfish 】

Beltfish, a member of the cutlassfish family and called galchi in Korean, is well loved by many people because of its clean taste and abundance of meat. Being a specialty product of Jeju-do, it’s easy to find restaurants serving galchi dishes, the most common being galchi gui (grilled beltfish) and galchi jorim (stewed beltfish). Galchi gui is fried on a pan or grilled with salt to bring out the best flavor of the meat. In galchi jorim, the fish is braised with a variety of vegetables in a seasoning made from red pepper powder for a sweet yet spicy dish.

Grilled black pork

  • 【 Photo: Grilled black pork and seafood 】
【 Photo: Grilled black pork 】

If beltfish is the representative specialty product of Jeju’s sea, black-haired pigs, or heukdwaeji, are the specialty product of the land. The cooking method for black pork is the same as regular pork but the meat is chewier and regarded as a more nutritious and high-grade pork. When visiting Jeju-do, black pork should be at the top of your list for things to try.

Tangerine juice & Udo Island peanut ice cream

  • 【 Photo: Juice made of Jeju specialty products 】

If one item can't be left out, it’s tangerines. The sweet taste of Jeju tangerines is delicious on its own but these days the most popular way to enjoy the fruit is by drinking freshly squeezed tangerine juice. Shops and cafés throughout Jeju-do are selling juice made from squeezing a whole tangerine for full flavor. The citrus juicing trend is not limited to tangerines; hallabong and cheonhyehyang, among other specially cultivated fruits of Jeju are also made into refreshing drinks full of vitamins that burst with flavor.

Another specialty product of Jeju is Udo Island peanuts, which have a strong nutty flavor in comparison to their small size. Ice cream sprinkled with the local peanuts went viral on social media as one of the must-try food in Jeju Island. Once a local favorite of Udo Island, the ice cream can now be seen being sold at several shops in Jeju due to its wide popularity. Finish your trip by looking back at all you did in the past three days over a cup of smooth and creamy vanilla ice cream topped with the rich nuttiness of Udo Island peanuts.
