[Gourmet Restaurant Series 3] Sinchon, the Street of Food Festivals

 

The streets of Sinchon are always bustling with crowds of young people. Yonsei, Sogang, and Ewha universities are located here, creating a unique youth culture. Naturally, countless restaurants cater to the tastes of the younger generation. Various Western, fusion, and Korean traditional restaurants provide a number of pleasant choices. Following are typical gourmet restaurants in the area.

GYROS

GYROS is known as the first Greek food restaurant in Seoul.
The menu includes gyros (roast chicken or pork wrapped in pita bread) and souvlaki (skewered meat and vegetables brushed with olive oil and roasted).
Some foreign visitors even come here to buy the delicious pita bread.
TIP> For a meal serving two, try the Olympic Set and enjoy several choices.

NOLITA

Famous for pasta, the restaurant’s name is an acronym for North of Little Italy.
The recommended menu includes pescatore, a spaghetti dish with more than 10 seafood ingredients: shellfish, shrimp, squid, and crab with tasty tomato or cream sauce. It is served in a boat-shaped pizza loaf, which also tastes great with your after-dinner drink.
Other delicious choices are carbonara (cream sauce, bacon, and egg), grancchio (cream sauce and crab), and low -calorie vegetariano salads.
TIP> Try wine or fruit juice rather than soda, with your pasta.

Proceed between the main gate and the beauty salon about 10 meters to the three-story, red-brick building. NOLITA is on the second and third floors.

April Lime

“Yeongyangbap 115cal,” “Pumpkin and Sweet Potato Salad 114cal.”
April Lime presents its customers with bills that include a calorie count! Most foods here are quick and convenient, and they are also good for you. High in nutrition and low in calories, the meals here contain more vitamins, protein, and fiber and less fat, sugar, and salt, making them most popular with female customers.
Typical fare includes rice balls, salads, and desserts. And these are not ordinary rice balls. You can choose from yeongyangbap (consisting of 10 types of grain), steamed potherb and mushroom rice ball, and kimchi-cheese rice ball. The chicken bagel with medicinal herbs is also popular. The salad is dressed with a sweet-sour honey and lime dressing.
TIP> Located on the 13th floor, April Lime boasts a commanding view. Enjoy a leisurely meal in the terraced garden.

☞ How to Get There: From Exit 4 of Sinchon Station (Subway Line No. 2), walk about 250 meters to Atreon, a 13-story glass-covered building to your left. On the first floor of the building (KFC is here), take an escalator to the second floor and then take the elevator to the 13th floor.

Sushi California

Numerous restaurants in Sinchon specialize in California rolls, the favorite fusion meal of Korean youngsters because of the great taste, shape, and convenience.
At Sushi California, you can enjoy an exciting variety of sushis and sushi rolls. These creations were invented at the restaurant and given unique names, shapes, and flavors: victoria roll (with smoked salmon and shrimp) and cheesy dragon roll (with eel, shrimp, and cream cheese) are just two choices.

TIP> Dip a roll into a mixture of soy sauce and green Japanese wasabi (horseradish) for a piquant treat.

BaB

The mother of an Ewha graduate owns this Korean food restaurant, serving her customers with the same devotion as to her beloved daughter.
BaB-jeongsik (regular set) is the most popular choice on the menu, which includes soybean paste soup or tofu soup, nine side dishes including fritters, seasoned pumpkin and bean sprouts, and pan-broiled anchovy. Bibimbap (steamed rice with assorted vegetables) is also popular.
The tasty yet inexpensive fare has made BaB a university students’ favorite since it opened in 2001.
TIP> The restaurant also has a beautiful interior.

Botong Saram

This snack bar is best known for its gyeranmari-bap (rice egg-roll) and al-bap (fish-egg rice).
The tasty rice egg-roll is made of eight ingredients including steamed rice, ground beef, seaweed, and black sesame seeds. Formidable in size, these rolls require two bites to finish. The fish-egg rice is Korean style, containing chopped kimchi.
You can also enjoy various other choices such as ramyeon, naengmyeon (cold noodles), bokkeumbap (fried rice), kimbap (seaweed sushi), and tonkatsu (Japanese style pork cutlet).
TIP> The rice egg-roll makes a delicious snack.

Samho Bokjip

Opened in 1976, this restaurant has specialized in tasty globefish food with fresh fish and vegetables as well as pure, delicate broth. Popular menu includes bok-shabu-shabu (paper- thin slices of globefish and vegetables cooked in a pot of hot broth) and bok-malgeuntang (delicately flavored globefish soup).
TIP> Also try a side dish of seasoned globefish skin for a wonderful “chewy” experience.
