| Jeju Island Tours: Luxury

| One of the best ways to see what all that Jeju Island has to offer is to drive along its coastal highway. Both have advantages: cruising around in a convertible car and sightseeing in style, while riding around on a bike is a fun-filled, youthful way to enjoy the island. |

The western coast of Jeju Island is characterized by a deep blue sea, black basalt cliffs, and a coastal road that provides an open view of the sea. Unlike other tourist venues, the attraction of this course is the beautiful natural coastline and beaches. Make sure to stop at Hyeopjae Beach to see the exquisite colors of the sea. Later, stop at Songaksan Mountain (despite its name, it is not a high mountain) for a submarine tour and enjoy the sky’s afterglow as the sunsets.

Olle Resort is all about relaxation, with an outdoor pool, restaurants, a spa, a putting green, and a DVD/book rental store. Olle is a “pool villa,” one of the few such accommodations in Korea. The most recommended are those with their own private pools. The suites, which are either single-story or two-story, have a wood-paneled interior, a jacuzzi, a home theater, and a fireplace. Best of all, each room has its own 8-meter-long pool where you can relax and have fun throughout the day. You can also enjoy golfing or yachting at Olle Resort.

This submarine, which accommodates 50 passengers, descends 20 meters into the undersea world teeming with life. After boarding the first boat, passengers will enjoy a 15-minute ride out to sea before reaching the submarine dock and transferring to a yellow submarine. The submarine then takes you into the depths where you can view rainbow colored coral reefs and a variety of many fish. A diver lures a small shark and other fish towards the windows to the delight of passengers watching from within.
The finale of the submarine tour is the huge sea spray created as the submarine surfaces. When you return to shore, don’t forget to pick up your free photo next to the ticket counter. The trip takes about an hour.

Pick up your bike at Jeju Airport and start your trip. On the first day, you will sightsee the northwestern part of the island. Traveling west on the coastal road from the airport, the deep blue sea and black stone beaches will be on your right side. Passing by Iho Beach on the way to Oedo-dong, you’ll see many old Jeju-style houses. Mid-way along the Suwol-ri Coastal Drive, you’ll come to a natural basalt pool filled with seawater. Then, enjoy the jade colored waters of Hyeopjae and Geumneung beaches before wrapping up the first day.
Accommodations include many private lodgings nearby, as well as camping on the beach (in July and August).
Rates are between 30,000 won and 50,000 won per night. Day 1 includes some ascents that may tax your energy, but the landscape is so beautiful it will be well worth it.

| [Day 2: Hyeopjae Beach ~ Seogwipo (about 80km)] |
The Day 2 itinerary is relatively easy. Unlike the first day, this part follows a flat and virtually traffic-free road. The best attraction is the cacti, which can be seen after you pass through the town of Wollyeong-ri. You’ll continue to see these cacti until you reach Sanbangsan Mountain, and again from Songaksan Mountain past Moseulpo Port. However, be sure to stay focused as you enter the Jungmun Resort, where the coastal drive ends and downtown roads (with more traffic) appear. The Jungmun resort offers numerous tourist attractions, so be sure to work it into your schedule ahead of time. |

Lotte ~ Silla ~ Hyatt Hotel Cliff Walking Path

This is the best highlight of the trip, which are the walking paths at Jungmun Resort. First, visit the theme park on basement level 3 of Lotte Hotel, where the drama All In was filmed. As you walk straight ahead from the Windmill Garden, you’ll see the Jungmun Beach Observatory and to the right, you’ll come upon the entrance to the cliff’s walking path. This path is also connected to the walking paths of the Silla and Hyatt hotels. The surrounding landscape is fantastic. The film locations of the movie Swiri and the drama All In are located here. There are a few connections to the beaches along the path. A round trip takes about an hour.

There are no attractions, so you can pedal your way to the next destination of Seopjikoji at a leisurely pace. But be prepared for many ascending areas on your way up to Seopjikoji. |

In the Seongsan Ilchulbong area, there are many private lodges and motels with rates between 30,000 won and 40,000 won. If you want to stay at a guesthouse, we recommend Wahaha Guesthouse located along Pyoseon-ri Coastal Drive. It has dormitory rooms available for only 10,000 won. | [Day 4: Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak ~ Jeju Airport (about 70km)] |
Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is famous for its sunrises. Bike up early in the morning for the sunrise (round trip 40 minutes) and bike your way towards the northeastern part of Jeju. Day 4 presents two options: the first one is a trip to Udo Island and the second is a trekking experience on an oreum (volcanic formation). Select one of the options to enjoy in the morning. In the afternoon, you’ll be biking a long way on the coastal drive. Both options would be too much to squeeze into one day.

※ Make your Biking More Enjoyable!
1. Kayaking at Hamdeok Beach
At Hamdeok Beach, you can enjoy an hour of leisurely kayaking. It is safe since the water is shallow (for the average person), and after brief instructions, you are good to go! You won’t need a swimsuit since swimwear is available for rental. Both one- and two-person kayaks are available at a fee of 13,000 won per hour.

|
2. Two-Hours of Biking on Udo Island
Udo is an island located near Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. With a road along the coast, it is great for biking. The island also has some tourist attractions such as Sanho (Coral) Beach and Udo Lighthouse that you can visit. Otherwise, just enjoy the bike trip. There are two or three bike rental shops at Udo Port. Make sure to get a lock (a must whenever you want to stop and park) and an island map (it is in Korean, but it will still be useful to know the route) when renting a bike.
→ For more on Udo Island, click here! |
3. Two-Hour Trekking on Darangswi Oreum!
In Jeju, there are 360 oreums. A volcanic cone that failed to explode, an oreum is like a small hill. The trekking course on Darangswi Oreum near Bijarim Forest is quite difficult with a 30-degree ascent, but once you reach the top, the fantastic view of Jeju Sea, Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, and Udo Island can be seen, making the upward climb all worthwhile. The course takes about two hours round trip.

Important Biking Know-How!
1. When biking, make sure to keep to the right side of the road. If you get a flat tire or you encounter problems with the gears, find a nearby bike shop quickly before you encounter a bike injury. Don't forget to get the telephone number or the business card of your bike rental shop in case of emergency.
2. Always prepare a liter of water, a rain jacket, a hat, sunglasses, sun cream, towels, band-aids, and some medicine. Since you are sure to perspire a lot during the bike ride, make sure to have an extra change of clothes. Also, wear a fanny pack around your waist where you can keep items you’ll use frequently.
3. For longer bike trips, make sure to get a padded bike seat cover and bike gloves.
4. In summer, ride mainly in early morning or late afternoon. Try to avoid the heat at the peak of the afternoon. Instead take a break at a nearby tourist attraction or in a coffee shop. |
