| Tteokbokki (rice-cakes in red-pepper sauce) is a typical Korean snack. The secret of
its flavor lies in the harmony of chewy rice-cakes and spicy red pepper sauce. In Sindangdong, there are over
15 tteokbokki restaurants preparing it fresh, right on the spot. Besides rice-cakes, tteokbokki may also
include fritters, dumplings, boiled eggs, fish cakes, and many others. |
|
Preliminary Tips>
- The flavor of tteokbokki varies according to the ingredients, so take your choice.
However, if you find it hard to choose, you can simply order from the standard menu.
- If tteokbokki is not enough to fill you up, order a bowl of steamed rice. Mixed with
spicy tteokbokki sauce, the rice will stimulate your taste buds.
- Ingredients are also available as take-out for home cooking.- During October, the
Sindangdong Tteokbokki Festival stages various events such as tteokbokki cooking, and song and dance
competitions.
- After touring the Dongdaemun shopping area, you can satisfy your appetite with
Sindangdong tteokbokki. Most of the restaurants are open 24 hours. |

▒ Mabongnim Halmeoni
Tteokbokki
Opened in 1953 by a woman known as Mabongnim, the restaurant
takes pride in its 50-plus years of service. As Mabongnim gained popularity, other similar establishments
opened nearby, and eventually, formed “tteokbokki street.” The elderly proprietor is well known, even
starring in a red-pepper paste ad in the 1990s.
The secret of this restaurant’s tteokbokki lies in the
fact that red pepper paste is mixed with Chinese soybean paste for a sweet and spicy taste. Adopted by other
Sindangdong restaurants, the recipe is no longer a “secret.” Nevertheless, there is something special about
this restaurant’s fare. At present, Mabongnim’s daughters-in-law are running the store. |
|
| TIP> The restaurant gets mixed reviews,
but it is still recommended to those looking for unique flavor. |

▒ Jongjeom
Jongjeom has been open for 25 years. Initially, it was located at the end of Tteokbokki Street, which is how it
earned the name Jongjeom, meaning ‘the end of the line.’ (Currently, several other restaurants have opened
around Jeongjeom’s original location.) The restaurant serves Sindangdong-style tteokbokki, which combines red
pepper paste and Chinese soybean paste to create this sweet and spicy fare. Another well-known specialty is
dakpal (fried chicken feet seasoned with red pepper paste), which are especially popular among secondary school
students. |
