[Gourmet Restaurants Series 5] Apgujeong: Where to Enjoy Elegant Korean Table d’hôte

 

In Apgujeong, a mecca for the young and the young at heart, one can definitely experience metro culture and high-living here with its elegant shops and restaurants. With an abundance of ethnic restaurants and fast-food restaurants to choose from, the area also offers high quality Korean restaurants with sophisticated décor as well as tasty table d’hôte. These are especially popular among female customers who consider atmosphere as well as taste essential to eating out. Here are some of outstanding restaurants.

▒ GAON

Like its name, which means ‘center’ in Korean, Gaon aims to be the quintessential Korean restaurant. With its sophisticated interior, GAON also provides excellent food and service. Cooked by a first-class chef using fresh ingredients, the tasty food is served on stylish earthenware dishes. Recommended menu items include jeonbokjjim (steamed abalone) and bulgogi (roast beef with mushroom and assorted vegetables). Wine or a traditional beverage with your meal will stimulate your appetite.

How to Get There: From Exit 5 of Apgujeong Station (Subway Line No. 3), take a taxi to Dosan Gongwon (park), which will cost about 2,000 won. From the left of the park's entrance, walk about 100 meters and you will find GAON on your left.
If you prefer walking to the restaurant, go out of Exit 2 of Apgujeong Station. Turn back, and proceed about 450 meters along the main street until you reach the first intersection. Cross the street and turn right at the S-OIL station. Continue about 650 meters and turn left at a building HEIGHTS PARK. You’ll see the restaurant sign, "KOREAN RESTAURANT GAON".

▒ Gaehwaok

This restaurant specializes in tasty bulgogi in an attractive atmosphere. Lightly spiced, and a high-grade beef, bulgogi is cooked on a Korean-style brazier for optimum temperature and taste. Also famous are bossam, consisting of sliced pork and kimchi, and ibuk-sundae, North Korean style sausage prepared by a cook, originally from North Korea. In addition, side dishes such as mildly sour radish kimchi and fresh vegetables stimulate your taste buds. The restaurant interior resembles a gallery with art adorning the walls. On a sunny day, an outdoor table is highly recommended.
TIP: Sweet potatoes, corn, and steamed garlic are served as appetizers.

How to Get There: From Exit 5 of Apgujeong Station (Subway Line No. 3), take a taxi or bus to McDonald’s, across from the Galleria Department Store. From McDonald’s, walk to the left of McDonald’s until you reach a T-intersection. Turn right and walk straight down about 40 meters until you see the restaurant sign. If you prefer walking to the restaurant, go out of Exit 2 of Apgujeong Station. Go backwards and proceed about 450 meters along the main street, until you reach an intersection. Cross the street and proceed past the S-OIL station about 450 meters, until you reach McDonald’s, which will be on your right.

▒ Gaeseong House

In this restaurant, an elderly woman from Gaeseong (in North Korea) serves up her native cuisine. The attractive interior of Gaeseong House is filled with all ages from young to older customers who love Gaeseong-style food. Favorites include joraeng-pyeonsu-guk, a rice-cake and dumpling soup cooked Gaeseong style.
During lunchtime, the table d’hôte is recommended: you can enjoy various menu items such as bossam (boiled meat slices wrapped in lettuce leaves or kimchi), steamed pollack fish, Korean pancakes, mung-bean jelly, japchae (mixed noodles, vegetables, and beef slices) and cooked greens.

☞ How to Get There: From Exit 4 of Apgujeong Station (Subway Line No. 3), proceed between DUNKIN DONUTS and THE BODY SHOP until you reach an intersection. Turn left and then turn right at a T- intersection. Walk about 50 meters until you see a restaurant sign that looks like this, “開城 house.” Gaeseong House is next to BOSS CLUB.

▒ Saworae Boribap

This restaurant specializes in boribap (steamed barley). Once a rather humble staple, boribap has been reintroduced as a popular health food. The meal consists of steamed barley and potato, as well as ten types of cooked greens, all mixed with red-pepper paste. Miso soup is also given as a side dish. Add some soup to the boribap for more flavor. Gamjajeon (a potato pancake) and dotorimuk (an acorn-starch jelly) are recommended as good appetizers.
TIP: Compared to steamed rice, boribap is rough textured.

▒ Sakanaya

Sakanaya specializes in tasty and artfully-prepared sushi and sushi rolls. The restaurant provides about 500 menu items including salmon sushi, sea bass sushi, as well as various sushi rolls and fritters. The restaurant serves seasonal menu favorites, which you can choose from the circulating round table. To better enjoy the food, it is recommended that you try the milder tasting white fish sushi first, and then the sushi rolls or fritters. Fruit puddings and tropical fruits are excellent choices of desserts. If you have a preference for certain sushi or sushi rolls, you can ask the cook about their availability.

Proceed about 200 meters until you reach a T-intersection where you will find an AMELIE Cake Shop. Turn left and walk about 100 meters until you see the sign for Miyozen.
If you prefer walking to the entry of RODEO drive, go out of Exit 2 of Apgujeong Station. Turn backwards and proceed about 450 meters along the main street until you reach the first intersection. Cross the street and proceed past the S-OIL station about 400 meters.

AMELIE
AMELIE specializes in tea and cakes. An herb or fruit tea and a piece of cake make a wonderful dessert. Thirty to forty types of lovely cakes are prepared and consumed each day. Especially famous are the cheese cakes and fruit cakes: the latter goes well with soft fresh cream and fruits. Making a choice from among these artfully prepared cakes is a pleasure in itself.
