| Introduction | ||
| The area in and around Gangjin was a central production site of blue celadon for 500 years during the Goryeo Dynasty. More than 80% of the nation’s celadons, which are designated as national treasures or treasures were made in Gangjin. Moreover, almost all Korean celadons that are considered masterpieces around the world were produced in the Gangjin area, which had the benefits of advanced sea transport, optimal clay sources, plentiful fuel, good-quality water and suitable climate. The Gangjin Celadon Cultural Festival showcases the excellence and uniqueness of Goryeo celadon with a special festival program that sets it apart from the rest. No wonder it is gaining popularity as a tourist destination. Festival Programs: Located in a natural setting, the festival awaits visitors with a variety of programs held in the great outdoors. With about 80 programs available, visitors will want to see as many as possible. First, the Celadon Exhibition showcases the beautiful celadon works of Korea’s leading artisans, which were selected in a pre-festival competition. Also, the Celadon Museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of celadon and see various artifacts. In addition, visitors can also visit the classic celadon sale exhibition, the exhibition of unrevealed original Goryeo celadons, an exhibit comparing the celadons of Korea and China, and a show featuring the work of globally-recognized artists. Of special interest, the celadon musical instruments offer a completely new perspective on the art. The festival will also put on 20 performances, including a concert of popular artists, rope dancing performance, orchestral music, Sansa concert (Concert at a temple in the mountain), Pungmullori, samullori, martial arts demonstration, and a gut (traditional exorcism) performance. Festival Highlights: Of the numerous ceramic festivals in Korea, the Gangjin Celadon Cultural Festival is the only one that features celadon alone. This is a great opportunity to see Korean celadons of the highest quality and artistic value, and it includes modern celadons produced by leading local and overseas artists, as well as traditional works that have been designated as national treasures or treasures. Many of the celadon pieces will be showcased for the first time. |
