|The Busan Biennale is a grand-scale art exhibition, which has been held every two years since the beginning of 2000. The purpose of the Busan Biennale is to promote local art on an international level as well as to promote modern art to area locals. In 2004, over 1 million people visited the Busan Biennale, solidifying the exhibition as a mainstay for viewing the current and future state of modern art. During the 2006 Busan Biennale, approximately 280 art pieces from about 40 countries were exhibited.
The 2012 Busan Biennale runs from September 22nd through November 24th at the Busan Museum of Art and surrounding areas. This year’s theme “Garden of Learning” hopes to garner a deeper understanding of Busan’s history and culture through community interaction and appreciation of art. The main exhibition also titled “Garden of Learning” will be held at the Busan Museum of Art. Comprised of 41 artists, a relatively small amount compared to your average biennale, the exhibition will aim to reevaluate the modern idea of art galleries by presenting itself as an opportunity for community development and education through its art and artists.
Selected as contest winners, many rookie curators will be hosting exhibitions throughout Busan. Also, auxiliary educational programs will focus on Busan’s history as well as its modern state. Alongside these exhibitions, various festivals and events will serve as spaces where organizers, participating artists, and patrons can communicate with one another.
