|Daegu Opera House / The Daegu International Opera Festival Organizing Committee|
Between 2003 and 2009, Daegu International Opera Festival presented 123 performances (65 different performances from 40 international organizations in eleven countries). It has attracted over 140,000 visitors and seat occupancy rates regularly reach over 80%. Drawing acclaims from the public and the press, it has become a main festival in Daegu and the only opera festival in Asia.
Beginning as PRE Daegu Opera Festival in 2003, the festival has invited outstanding opera theaters from around the world, worked on joint performances with them, and exchanged musicians with them (Teatro Dell’opera Di Roma in 2004, Mussorgsky Opera and Ballet Theater in 2004, Salerno Theatre in 2005, Slovak National Theatre in 2005, Badishces Staatstheater Karlsruhe from 2006 to 2009, Opera Nationala Bucuresti in 2006, Schonbrunn Palace Theater in 2007, Opera Theatre of Lucca in 2007, Tokyo Opera Production in 2007, National Theater (Sofia) in 2007, Aterballetto in 2007, and Staatstheater in 2008). In addition, the festival has shown operas by outstanding Korean theaters and opera singers.
By showing world-class operas, the festival has established itself as a main opera festival in Asia. For its efforts, the festival has been frequently honored with the best festival awards in music or performance areas (to name a few, the top music festival and third-best performance festival in 2006 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism). In 2009, outstanding performances by Korean theaters and opera singers during the festival attracted acclaims from the world and led to numerous invitations from European countries. The festival will continue to be one of the most unique and global festivals for years to come.
