|Seondeung Festival takes
place on Seondeung Street, with lights and lanterns in the shape of
Sancheoneo (mountain trout) that illuminate the street with a soft glow.
Seondeung literally means "The lights showing the world in which a taoist hermit is living." It also means a place of "3 rak (joy)," representing the joy of becoming a taoist hermit, having a beautiful heart and constitution, and receiving a lot of luck.
The lighting of Seondeung Street is the opening event of the Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Mount Trout) Ice Festival, and includes a ceremony for New Year's wishes. In addition to the lighting ceremony, there are also various performances, a photo contest, an exhibition of traditional lights around the world and wish-writing on postcards, along with many other events every week of the festival.
