The Makgeolli Expo was first held in Korea in 2010, as a way for various countries to promote their related makgeolli industries. Makgeolli, unrefined rice wine, has become a popular traditional wine. The festival aims to promote makgeolli, which is made from rice, as one solution in the issue of surplus rice, a major issue for agricultural administrators in Korea. The festival also offers the opportunity to promote traditional Korean culture and contribute to the globalization of Hansik (Korean food). The expo's venue also serves as a marketing site for the makgeolli industry.
