Hanoks (Traditional Houses)

Stepping into a Hanok (한옥), traditional Korean houses, is like stepping back in time. These houses, made of wood, stone, and paper are simplistic yet incredibly elegant. Hanoks are heated by the ancient ondol system (온돌), a uniquely Korean heating method that heats the entire floor from below.
In recent years, there has been a movement to protect Hanoks from being destroyed in the name of development. Government funding is available for owners of Hanoks to preserve their homes. If you are seeking to experience a more traditional side of Korea you can satisfy your curiosity through one of the many Hanok Stay programs.
