| Bakdaljae Pass is widely known as the subject of the famous Korean song "Crossing the Teary Hill of Bakdaljae". It is also the site of a sad love story between a scholar named Bakdal from Gyeongsang-do Province and a maiden named Geumbong from Chungcheong-do Province. Situated near the historic Bakdaljae Pass, Bakdaljae Natural Forest was created amongst the harmonious natural landscape of 100 to 170 year-old pine trees, lush forests, and attractive rock formations. In particular, the pine trees growing on the cliffs of Gyeongeunsa Temple, set against a beautiful backdrop of natural surroundings, offer a view as gorgeous as a painting. Located on the top of the Bakdaljae Pass are an octagonal pavilion, a spring, rest area, and a small park. Bakdaljae Natural Forest is a popular summer vacation spot. Its clear stream meandering through the valley is cold even in mid-summer. The observatory on top of the mountain offers a panoramic view of the area as far as Jecheon City, and also views steep mountains like Baegunsan and Guhaksan. There is a Roman Catholic Church 6 kilometers east of Bakdaljae Natural Forest, so hikers may also make a pilgrimage. |
