|This is the only monument from the Goguryeo era on the Korean Peninsula. It is considered to have been built near the end of the 5th century. Of the 700 or so letters on the monument, about 200 are readable and based on the content, it is presumed to be a monument commemorating the occupation of the Hangang River area by King Jangsu. Though the content is unclear, it is considered by scholars that the monument was erected in commemoration of the reconciliation between the Goguryeo state and Silla state over their territorial conflicts. Part of the letters show that the two states proposed to make peace.|
