Opened in 1999, the Cinémathèque Busan was the first film archive facility in Korea. Dedicated to collecting and preserving the cultural heritage of films and video materials, the Cinémathèque Busan also includes an exclusive theater and archives. Quality independent art movies are shown year round, and various video materials are available for public viewing.

Famous directors, actors, and movie industry specialists visit the place regularly to promote dialogue with the public. The Cinémathèque Busan is also taking the lead in initiating programs such as the visiting cinema and programs geared for families.

The Cinémathèque Busan is considered a prestigious place by film lovers. By opening the Film Archives, the institution is establishing a reputation as a mecca for Korean art movies. After relocating to the Busan Cinema Center in October 2011, the institution is now enjoying a second beginning with improved facilities, environment, and programs.
