| The Seoul Art Cinema is one of Korea’s greatest cultural resources. This non-profit cinematheque screens over 300 films each year for educational and cultural purposes. In addition to retrospectives of the world’s best filmmakers, the Seoul Art Cinema holds special events to show international films, classic and indie films, and films related to historic, political, or social events. As a regular event, famous Japanese films (selected based on director, theme, and time period) are shown free of charge. On the third Friday of every month, Korean new independent short films are shown. Each month, the Seoul Art Cinema picks a director and provides him/her with an opportunity to meet with the audience and talk about his or her film-making philosophy. Seoul Art Cinema also runs a “Small School at the Movie Theater,” which is a program designed to introduce students to the joys of film and cinematography. Participating students get the privilege of having discussions with film directors, critics, and film experts. A variety of educational programs for the general public, movie lovers, or film producers are held throughout the year, including symposiums and movie discussion forums. |
