Visit Korea committee holds a shopping tourism festival for foreign visitors, ‘Korea Grand Sale’, from Jan. 20th to Feb. 28th in order to attract foreign tourists to Korea and boost their spending in Korea.


Korea Grand Sale has become a representative shopping tourism festival which is combined with shopping, tourism and the Korean Wave, “Hallyu”, after having been held every winter since 2011 to overcome the low-season in tourism of Korea. This shopping festival will be held every February under the name of Korea Grand Sale, and every October as the title of Korea Sale FESTA to provide special benefits to foreign visitors. Especially, during the upcoming festival, the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and winter sports will be promoted actively to elate the atmosphere of the festival. Mainly in Gangwon province, the Olympic Winter Games and winter festivals such as ‘Gangwon Grand Sale’, ‘Olympic Festival’, ‘K-Drama in Peyongchang’ and ‘Hwacheon Mountain Trout Festival’ will be introduced to give unforgettable memories to foreign visitors. Participating ski resorts in Gangwon will provide special discounts as much as 50% for tickets for ski lifts, sightseeing gondolas and ski equipment rental services, with many other special offers. Also, the Korea Grand Sale event center, which will be installed in Dongdaemun, Seoul, will provide special opportunities to experience winter sports using the virtual reality (VR) content. It will also be associate with the campaign, ‘2017~2018 Gangwon Visit Year’, declared last December 21st to promote Gangwon province to foreigners.


The festival will offer various benefits in the areas of shopping, accommodations, transportation, entertainment, beauty/health, food & beverage and more to foreign visitors. Jeju Air will provide up to 91% discounts on the regular fares of their international flights (Overseas Korea) on a first-come first-served basis. Jin Air will also offer up to 80% discounted fares for their international flights from foreign countries to Korea. Shilla Stay will offer up to 50% discounts on their rooms and give complimentary room upgrades on a first-come first-served basis. Grand Ambassador Seoul plans to provide up to 55% discounts on their superior rooms. The N Seoul Tower will provide 30% off the admission tickets as well as 10% off the beverages. For cosmetics, The Face Shop holds a ‘Buy One Get One’ promotion for popular items, and All Mask Story will provide up to 80% discounts on all items. Galleria Duty Free 63 offers up to 50% discounts along with free gifts by brands. The Doota Duty Free shop will offer up to 30% discounts and additional 5% discounts during the night time (PM09:00~AM00:00). Lotte Hi-mart will give up to 30% discounts on popular electric rice cookers, up to 45% discounts on all kitchen electric appliances and 20% discounts on computers and laptops. Shinsaegae Department Store will provide up to 30% discounts with welcome gifts, and Hyundai I-Park Mall will hold a lottery event to give out 3 round-trip flight tickets in total to foreign visitors.


Besides, ‘Special Theme Weeks’ will be designated to welcome foreign visitors at the event center in front of the Doota Mall in Dongdaemun, with various subjects such as Must-Buy Week, Must-See Week, Must-Do Week and Must-Eat Week. Every theme week, there will be many interesting events for visitors. First, during the Must-Buy Week (1.20~1.31), foreigners will be provided with free cosmetics and ginseng products by showing the shopping receipts and attending events at the event center, depending on the total amount of purchase. Secondly, during the Must-See Week (2.1~2.7), there will be various shows including popular non-verbal performances and traditional music concerts. Thirdly, during the Must-Do Week (2.8~2.21), special events using the virtual reality (VR) content will be held so that visitors can experience the winter sports such as skiing and bobsleigh. Lastly, during the final week, Must-Eat Week (2.22~2.28), 30 best dishes from Gangwon province that are chosen and made by famous Korean chefs, Edward Kwon, Hyunseok Choi and Sujin Kim to boost the atmosphere of the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympic Games in advance will be introduced with popular Korean snack tasting events.


During the period of Korea Grand Sale, two event centers will be installed in Myeongdong and Dongdaemun to promote the festival and provide event information and convenient services for foreign visitors. In Myeongdong, the event center will be set up in front of the Lotte department store from Jan. 20th to 31st along with Chinese New Year holidays and provide event information and free gifts to visitors. Throughout the festival period, the event center in Dongdaemun will provide such convenient services as tourism information in foreign languages, free internet/Wi-Fi and phone charging services to foreign visitors. Also, the ‘Korea Tour Cards’ which have received fervent response among foreigners through the pre-promotion last October will be launched. Moreover, foreign tourists can use the ‘Hands Free Service’, which is a luggage delivery/storage service at a discounted rate. This service is provided among department stores-hotels-airports and other major places in Seoul, allowing foreign visitors to enjoy shopping without having to carry heavy luggage.
