Recommended Korean Food for Indian palate

With regard to cuisine, South Korea is known to have a strong regional and traditional connect. Typically, bold in taste, Korean food is found to be centred around rice and soup accompanied by a meat or fish dish, with diverse sides available. Traditional Korean meals are distinguished for the number of side dishes (banchan) that accompany steam-cooked short-grain rice. When on a Korean voyage, no trip would be considered complete without indulging in the sumptuous delights of Korean food.

  • Kimchi is the quintessential side dish in Korea. The most popular variety of Kimchi is usually made by marinating Napa cabbage with salt; seasoning it with red pepper, garlic, green onion, julienned radishes; mixing it thoroughly and letting it ferment. Depending on the fermentation level, the taste of kimchi is different, such as sour or savoury.

  • Bibimbap is a bowl of rice with various marinated and/or cooked vegetables. It is usually served with gochu-jang (red chili pepper paste) as a seasoning condiment. Addition of any meat or seafood is optional, thus making it the perfect choice especially for vegetarians!

  • Dakgalbi is a chicken dish which is quite popular because of its affordability and large portions. Chopped chicken is marinated in a gochu-jang (red chili paste) seasoning and stir-fried with tteok (rice cakes) and various vegetables such as sweet potato, cabbage and perilla leaves to prepare this Korean favourite

  • Pajeon is a savoury Korean pancake with pa (scallions) as its main ingredient. In Korean, a seafood pajeon is called haemul pajeon and is one of the most popular varieties. Depending on the variety, different seafood or meat can also be included in the dish.

  • Samgyetang or ginseng chicken soup consists primarily of a whole young chicken - filled with garlic, rice, jujube, and ginseng. It is a Korean traditional health food often consumed during sultry summer days to invigorate the body.

  • Hotteok is a Korean street food favourite which is usually prepared with a filling of brown sugar, cinnamon and nuts and pan fried in a little oil. Especially popular in winter, some modern variations of hotteok are stuffed with vegetables or cheese instead.

  • Bingsu is a popular Korean shaved ice dessert found almost everywhere in Korea during the summer months. This snack is composed of ice shavings and various sweet toppings that may include chopped fruit, condensed milk, fruit syrup, and red beans.
