Seven prestigious temples of Korea have recently been added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage for their significant cultural value. Designated temples are as follows: Beopjusa Temple in Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do; Magoksa Temple in Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do; Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do; Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do; Buseoksa Temple in Yeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do; Bongjeongsa Temple in Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do; and Tongdosa Temple in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.

During the evaluation of World Heritage nominees last month by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), four of the seven temples were recommended to the list. However, after vigorous efforts by Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cultural Heritage Administration, all seven were unanimously selected by 21 voting countries to be registered as World Heritage sites.

The World Heritage Committee (WHC) has evaluated that Korea’s history of Buddhism along with the temples’ architecture and their surrounding environment, as well as lifestyle and culture within the temple grounds, to have an outstanding universal value that meets the criteria to be registered as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. With the new addition of the temples, Korea now has a total of 13 cultural heritages recognized by UNESCO.
